November Marine Safety Workshops in Sitka

AMSEA has a couple of marine safety workshops in Sitka this November of interest to trollers. The first workshop is a 10-hour Fishing Vessel Drill Conductor workshop on Monday, November 16 from 8:00 AM to 4:30 PM and on Tuesday, November 17 from 9:00 AM to 1:00 PM.

This workshop is an excellent opportunity for commercial fishermen and other mariners to gain hands-on training with marine safety equipment and learn best practices for surviving emergencies at sea. The workshop covers cold-water survival skills; EPIRBs, flares, and maydays; man-overboard recovery and firefighting; immersion suits and PFDs, helicopter rescue, life rafts, abandon ship procedures, and emergency drills.

AMSEA’s Drill Conductor workshops meets the U.S. Coast Guard training requirements for Drill Conductors on documented commercial fishing vessels operating beyond the federal boundary line. This workshop is offered to commercial fishermen at no cost, thanks to support from the U.S. Coast Guard, the Alaska Department of Commerce, Community & Economic Development, and the National Institute for Occupational Safety & Health. The cost is $175 for all others.

The second workshop is first aid and CPR workshop designed for commercial fishermen and other mariners in on Wednesday, November 18, 2015, 8:00 AM to 5:30 PM. Instructor, Eric Van Cise, will cover CPR & automatic external defibrillators (AED); treatment of choking; medical emergencies; trauma; environmental hazards; patient assessment; medical communications; drowning & hypothermia; and common fishing injuries. Attendees will receive a U.S. Coast Guard accepted, two-year certificate issued by the American Safety & Health Institute. The cost for the workshop is $95.00.
