Fishing Boat Safety Week in Sitka!

Sitka trollers can check three boxes on their safety training list on December 9, 10, and 11. On December 9, AMSEA will conduct a Fishing Vessel Drill Conductor workshop and on December 10, we will conduct our "Upright & Watertight: Vessel Stability and Damage Control for Commercial Fishermen" workshop. Both of these workshops are FREE to commercial fishermen, thanks to support from the U.S. Coast Guard, Alaska DCCED, and NIOSH.

On December 11, we are holding a Mariner's First Aid & CPR workshop. The workshop is tailored to the needs of commercial fishermen and cost $95.00. All workshops will be conducted at NSRAA, 1308 Sawmill Creek Road. The details about each workshop are below. To register, call AMSEA at (907) 747-3287. We hope to see you there!

December 9 - FREE F/V Drill Conductor Workshop

AMSEA is conducting a one-day Fishing Vessel Drill Conductor Training Workshop in Sitka, Alaska on December 9, 2014 from 8:00 AM to 7:00 PM. This course meets the US Coast Guard drill conductor requirements for fishing vessels.

Instructor, Rick Petersen, will cover these topics:

• Cold water survival skills
• EPIRBs, flares, and maydays
• Man overboard recovery
• Fire fighting
• Immersion suits and PFDs
• Emergency drills
• Helicopter rescue
• Life rafts
• Abandon ship procedures

The cost is FREE for commercial fishermen (after scholarship from the U.S. Coast Guard) and $175 for all others. All mariners are welcome!

December 10 - FREE Upright & Watertight: Vessel Stability Awareness

AMSEA will conduct the workshop, "Upright & Watertight: Fishing Vessel Stability Awareness & Damage Control for Commercial Fishermen" in Sitka, Alaska on Wednesday, December 10, 2014, from 8:00 AM to 4:00 PM.

Instructor, Jerry Dzugan, will cover:

• Basic Terminology of Stability
• Owner Responsibilities & Requirements
• What are Stability, Buoyancy, and Gravity?
• Vessel Stability: How Does it Work?
• Stability Risks
• Seamanship
• Damage Control
• Risk Factors for Different Fisheries and Operations
• How to Calculate, Evaluate, and Display Your Vessel's Stability
• How Stability Guidance is Created
• The "Roll Test"

All mariners are welcome. Thanks to scholarships from the U.S. Coast Guard, this training is currently offered FREE to commercial fishing vessel owners, skippers and crewmen!

December 11 - Mariner's First Aid & CPR

Instructors, Jerry Dzugan, Hope Merritt, and Rick Petersen, will cover the American Heart Association Heartsaver First Aid/CPR/AED curriculum, plus additional content related to boating and commercial fishing.

• Medical Communications
• Drowning & Hypothermia
• Common Fishing Injuries

Attendees will receive the AHA Heart Saver First Aid & CPR certification. The cost for this course is $95.
