I have a good old 19' glasply with the alaskan bulkhead I'd like to rig up for hand trolling next season and have been tossing around the idea of how to get a set of short poles and mini stabies on. Just enough to get the wire away from the boat so I can make a turn, handle 5 ft seas (while fishing) and get a little heavier gear on.

With boats our size, the most important consideration has to be,,,it will be coming in and out of the water a lot, that's the beauty of boats our size. I have a tall rack, with 16 foot poles. It's kind of a pain for me because by the time the boat sits up on top of a trailer, the poles won't fit under most power lines so I have to take them up and down each time in and out of the water. Not that huge of a deal, but needless in my opinion. If I had it to do over again, I'd go with the long davit set up that a lot of guys use, for this reason. See some of my pictures, or check out ,(trophy handtroller for sale, by Ambition in the for sale section) this is perfect model in my opinion.
The simpler, the better, I think. The guys I know who run these kinds of davits don't seem to have to big of a problem with crossing up their wires, which is the only reason for longer poles. Plus, in the unlikely event of hooking up on something solid, you don't have all the added leverage working against you,(very important consideration in a small boat.) Some of the guys who run these type of davits have figured out how to run stabbies independantly, I don't know how you could run them off of a short davit. I used to use stabbies, but they were a lot of work, took up a lot of room, and ultimately when it was time for them, it was usually time for me to be going home anyway.
Hope this helps,,,, good fishin'!!

Thanks Yak!
That all makes perfect sense. I'm just in the developments period and looking at all options. I've seen both setups and am looking to find the most effective in both cost and purposeful that I can come up with. I've already got a gnarly davit that hangs out about 3.5 feet to port that I designed for pulling up strings of pots far larger than I should attempt so I suppose I could mimic it to starboard as well.
I had never thought about mounting a cranker to the engine plate but it wouldn't take much.

the 1st season i hand trolled i fished straight off my davits and well not so good. It was to hard to turn and because of the boat i had landing fish was difficult because everything was going on in the last 2 feet of my boat. I then added 6 foot poles and they increased the productivity of my boat drastically.I am now able to turn sharply and landing the fish has become way easier now because my gear is not at the stern of my boat enymore it is on the side. just a couple of thoughts to consider.
