Fishing Season Requests

Hi All:

Here's a few things I hope you'll do and/or keep a look out for this season when you're on the grounds...

1. Coho Call In Program

If you are unfamiliar with this program, it is one that ATA started years ago when we weren't sure ADFG had a good handle on coho abundance. Since that time it's turned into a very cooperative project with our troll managers. We ask trollers to call in to ATA, or ADFG Petersburg or Sitka, every few days and report their scores and other details about fishing conditions. We can issue you an individually generated code if you aren't comfortable giving such information on the cell phone or answering machine/answering service. The more the better, especially since cell service seems to only get worse. That way, we'll have a steady stream of calls.

I know for certain that information this program has saved you fishing days in past years! This program is getting even more important as a portion of the fleet transitions to freezer - fewer landings/fish tickets means less data for ADFG to base decisions on.

Please give a call and we'll get you plugged into the program. Dale: 586-9400 (if you get the answering service, say you want to be in the call in program and leave your cell number - I'll call and give you my cell number). Brian Lynch, ADFG Petersburg 772-5234 or Pattie Skannes ADFG Sitka 747-8434.

2. Atlantic Salmon

Be on the look out... if you catch one, give it to the ADFG port sampler and tell them when/where you caught it. If you're not sure what they look like, ask the port sampler if they have a picture, or go to your ADFG office and ask for a wallet sized ID card. If they don't have it, ask me and I'll get you one.

3. High Seas Driftnet Gear

If you see this gear in the water or on the beach, please give me a call. If you are willing, we may be able to get you reimbursed for bringing the net to town for disposal.

Find corks? Please grab them and write in permanent ink where/when found. Send them to me.

Find web? Please cut two pieces - 2' x 2' - and send to me, or give to port sampler and ask them to call ATA 586-9400. Corks and any gear attached would be great.

Find net-marked fish? If you have a digital camera, take a picture of both sides of the fish and note when/where caught. Send the pics to me: ata@gci.net Give fish to the port sampler with info on when/where caught.

Be safe out there!
