internet on the fishing grounds

So I am interested in getting internet (fishing grounds) on my boat. I understand that internet is available in places where your cell phone works.

So how does this work? Do I need to get setup with the provider (ATa&T) first? And do I have to use their little USB antenna or can I buy a antenna such as the one West Marine sells for wi-fi (sold for generic internet?)? <------a pretty good set-up too.

Or how about this, West Marine also sells a (super) booster. The thing about this booster is it is wireless and works much like a access point. So if I am committed to the little AT&T USB antenna, will this wireless booster help with my internet signal in tandem with AT&T's little antenna? The booster is meant for cell phones, but why wouldn't it work for internet too if the signal is coming from the same source?

The last thing I want is internet that only works if you are near a tower and can see it ....ya know? I have my cell phone boosted up pretty good and would like to do the same with my internet if I get it.

Any thoughts?

I'm on my way up to Alaska. I have an AT&T PCI Express Card (from Option) on my MacBook Pro.

I've had internet access most of the way (starting in Santa Cruz) and we're now off the Columbia river.

There is a company called Digital Antenna. You can buy their antenna and get an interface

cable that connects to the card that you insert into your laptop. I am amazed at how well

the card alone performs. I am currently 8 miles offshore.

As you noted, if you aren't in cell phone range, you won't get connected.
