Hello All, Iam planning on heading up to AK for the troll season, I have a troller that is trailerable and was planning on driving up to Saint Rupert , then putting truck and boat on ferry to Ketchikan. I question I have is storage availible in Ketchikan, and how much trouble should I expect crossing the border?

I have taken two boats through, never had a problem. Make sure your car and trailer have the proper lights, and registation for all three. The town you are headed for is Prince Rupert, Ketchikan will have everything you need.

I think that Saint Rupert got demoted. Now he's a mere prince.

Issues I've experienced crossing the US/Canada border have involved:

Firearms... you better not have any.

Pepper spray... you better not have any.

Produce... you maybe better not have any... and you really better not have certain things.

Tools... you better not have any big toolboxes onboard, or you best be able to prove you're not selling any tools or doing business in Canada without the proper papers.

Vehicles...make sure the boat and truck is yours and all the paperwork, tags, etc are current and shipshape, and know what's in every box - even if you're being helpful and bringing something for someone else.

There you have it, what little I know about causing a ruckus at the border. Oh, and crossing at Rupert is much easier than way up north, where the officers are lonely and bored.=)

Be sure to have your passport as well. The latest that I've heard is that they're actually going to begin requiring them for road travel between Canada and the US on June 1, 2009.

Have a good trip.

Hey thanks for the info, what about cleaning knives, should I toss em and buy new ones once I get up there.

I did this a few times in the early 90's but found it easier to leave my truck and trailer in P.R. and dump the boat in the water there. I found a place that let me store my rig for about $50 a month in a fenced lot. A word to the wise when crossing into Canada, do not give them ANY reason to be suspicious. Once they found a spent 9mm case in my truck and used that as an excuse to physically remove every item from my 23 ft Uniflite. When I complained about what they were doing they then went back spent a little extra time tearing out the wiring behind the dash of my truck. They just ripped the wires out of everything out to be jerks. I lost a lot of respect for the Canadian Border Guards that day. They sure taught me a lesson though, that drive was sheer hell with the stereo out of commission!

Hey there Pacific R thanks for the insight , You wouldnt happen to remember the name of that storage facility in PR. I was thinking also about leaving the rig and trailer , If you do great, if not , no sweat I will figure something out. Thanks
