How to hook up a tachometer? There has never been one on my boat, so I have nothing to go by. I have two Tach gauges. One is electric and the other has a thick cable that I believe plugs into the engine block somewhere (never could locate the spot, cable isn't long enough anyway). Is there a way to hook up the electric gauge to an alternator?

Depends on the make and model of motor.

Some detroits have a pick up on the side of the flywheel others have a mechanical drive with cable.

For a simple electric tach, you can often times hook it up to a post on the back of yer alternator.

look for the little post labeled "T" or "TACH"

It's a Detroit 471. I have the cable but have scoured every inch of that engine and I'll be damned if there is a place for hook up.

I have tried hooking up the electric tach to all of the different terminals on my alternator in different configurations with no success.

I have a 4-71, my tech is on the top of the left side looking at the engine from the front. Also looking at the engine the turbo is on the left side. Some of the engines can be turned around. I hope that helps

Tach can go on the cam cover either side front or back you may need a new cover with threaded connector,There should be a flattend sorta key type end on the cable that just slides in then screws to the cover The electric tach can be one of two types I had a elec tach that went on the same plate and used wire from there to the dash and I had one that was on the alternator. If you start your engine and it is running at 550 is you have the right one if it is running at 1100 it's time to email me, I thing I have? maybe a angle adapter that reduces the speed by 50% I will send you if I can find it. I will take a look for a adapter plate, in my Gimmy gunk box. I have a John Deere now no reason to keep that stuff. Good Luck
