No, not the opening line of another series of Start Trek, the one you keep in the wheelhouse. Actually calling it a captain's log feels funny on a boat my size, since I'm also the crew, but just the same, call it a journal if you like, there a good idea to have. Even skiff guys with no cabin should have one that they write into each night. I've found it helps to keep track of how many I caught, where, on what, speed, what the tide, weather, and currents were doing, price, and any cool things that happened for the day. It's kind of fun to look back years later, see what improvements you've made, and come up with strategies based on it. It's amazing how many times you see patterns arise.

A great idea, and I always had it in the back of my head that it was some kind of a requirement, a law of the sea. The log is also where I keep maintenance notes, and track fuel consumption. It makes it easy to pinpoint when you have a change in fuel useage, and tracking cannery and fuel dock prices against weather and other factors. I've also been known to write expletive-filled notes in the margins, which help me remember the trip and act as a great resource for sea stories!

Captain's Log, Stardate 54324.5: Starfleet Command has directed the Enterprise to do a preliminary exploration of planet --- in advance of a full research team. Scanners report the atmosphere to be breathable, but are receiving confusing readings with regard to life forms. I am beaming down with a landing party composed of all our chief officers except for poor Scotty

Captain's log, addendum. Troller third class with engineer Scotty, beamed down to event billed as PFMC meeting. Many egghead, strangely shaped organisms present. Logic not observed, can report that destruction of the troller species seems paramount. Small percentage of the life forms endanger themselves by facing the hostile environment to retrieve protien the rest of the host species requires, but the PFMC strain seeks to exterminate the odd trolling subset. Does not compute...

The old Star Treks were always the best. " never mind the phazers, will fight em' hand to hand."
