That Midas Touch

Anyone have any experience with trying to gold plate spoons? I just took inventory of all the brass and copper king spoons

I have and wished I could turn them to gold. Will Gibbs or Gold Star gold plate spoons? I see there are kits available to gold plate stuff but thought I'd see if anyone else has done their alchemy homework first.

Also, I just picked up an assortment of P.T.H. spoons. The paper sleeve they are packed in says ,"Designed by P.T. Hjorten". They look quite old with old style brass swivels and are a bit like a Canadian Wonder. This is one flavor I have not run across before and was wondering if they are worthy putting in the water or should I hang them on the wall along with my pink plastic HOT SPOT spoons.

This is a Bruie Sr I have two left they were one of those spoons a guy said "oh try these, they worked a hundred years ago" the first time it went into the water it caught a king, I used them for two years and lost a few but gold plating these old lure's would be great. I wonder how much a operation would cost to gold plate I have a lot of old brass and bronze that would look good as gold.

I have a whole bunch of brass/chrome. I asked the guys at Silver Horde about sending it in and getting the brass side switched to gold, they told me to forget it. Something about not being able to paint over spoons that already have a twin finish. You have to have a solid color, i.e.-all brass, all copper, or all chrome, in order for them to gold finish half of it. Doesn't make sense to me either, but that's what they said. That's why I started out with all copper, and all brass spoons. Silver Horde sends them somewhere to get all chromed, then when they get them back, they gold half of them.

Alchemy is a good choice of words, I have a hard time understanding a process that should be simple. I would be very interested in reading about the process of getting a gold finish to stick. I wonder if it has to be baked on?

I does seem like there's a lot more to it than meets the eye. The finish on some spoons will last for many fish and/or seasons, other spoons get a hit from one fish and half of the paint job flakes off.

All chrome wouldn't be bad then have them painted or finished the way you want. I like the spoons that are so beat that they have just a speck of color left and fish as good or better than a nice spoon, go figure is finish the answer or the right shaped spoon :o

funny one of the things i learned fly fishing was to get a packet of new flies and run them over a few times. having done this the newly ragged flies do seem to fish better than the bright shiny new flies.

i dont know the explination of this but it do seem to work.
