I got one maybe two trips of coho left and then I am going to run the old girl south to get new covering boards and alluminum bulwarks. I was wondering if anybody had some ideas as to who or where to go to do this kind of work, I am seriously considering Port Townsend, but not opposed to British Columbia or other places in Puget Sound. I have talked to Steelhead Marine but have been told I can find other tradesmen cheaper. I have been working on this for a while now but still haven't come up with a good plan so anythoughts on how to do this job would be appreciated. I know a lot of people would raise eyebrows at dumping money nintgo an old wood troller but the Carol W is a sweet ride and she makes me a living.

I am also looking for a disc containing canadian charts.

Greg Stupica works out of the same shop as Steelhead in Port Townsend. The name of his business is Lower Hadlock Shipwrights (He lives and started out in Hadlock) and his phone is 360-301-2111. A more honest and decent guy you wont meet. He did a significant amount of work to my Troller Vagabond and it was all top notch for a really reasonable rate.

I just met a really nice mechanic this morning in Petersburg and he mentioned that there are a few really good shipwrights in Wrangell who may be available. Wrangell being a lot closer than P.T. :)

The carol w is now on blocks in Port Townsend, I have reefed over 3/4 of the boat and am preparing to start refastening. It has been an eye opener to see the condition of the corking and to find nails completely gone in some cases. I would recomend anyone who has an old wood boat to seriously consider pulling a few nails to determine their condition.

I just returned from alaska where I attended a SSRAA meeting, one of the eyeopeners for me was how few SSRAA fish we as a fleet intercepted this year. As the allocation wars heat up i would remind all trollers that we have been outside of our allocation percentages longer than any other group and need to keep our place right at the head of the table in front of the other two gear groups. I have asked the SSRAA staff to look at the Neets Bay kings and see if there may be a different release site to increase our interception. I am also interested in pursuing otilith marking of both Kings and coho so we could maybe get closer to real time data during the season to try and track the migration through our fishery. An example of how this might work is if a sampling of Tebenkoff fish showed a high percentage of Neets kings on week 20 we could move over to Sumner in week 21 and increase our interception of these fish. Seiners and Gillnetters are doing this with chum now we need the same tools.

To date the coop is doing fine however the market stands a very good chance of being effected by the economy and it is still to early to tell. Financially we are in very good shape to manage the downturn in the economy and as long as other companies don't panic and sell their fish to cheap we should be fine. The one thing we have going for us is there were only a limited amount of Kings produced this year and we own a majority of them. And as far as coho is concerned we have filleted close to 90% of our production so the value should retain itself there.

Remember to vote for board members and also in general election.

And if anybody should pass thru Port Townsend during week days look me up I am sure I can give you a corking iron a hammer or a paintbrush.
