Spring trolling, Sitka

Come on guys and share some news. Here is the latest for those of you reading this.

I talked to Chip Blair yesterday and he told me we caught more Bear Cove Chinookies (1200) the last week of May than in any other last week of May since they started. Looks good for the return here as these fish were all over from Southern Chatham to Sitka.

I talked to Patty today and she was very enthusiastic about the hatchery percentages everywhere from Sumner Straits to Sitka. We all know abundance seems to be down so it is nice to have the formulas set so our good percentages translate into more time and opportunity.

Price is still good here at $6.50 per lb.

Hot tip of the week. Start thinking about green and chartruese for these hatchery kings from now on. Green herring; green and chartruese hootchies and spoons.

On a personal note I just returned from Seattle with clear scans and an excellent prognosis from my doctors so it looks like I will be on the drags for a few more years.

Oh no!! I am sure I didn't say anything about green glow. Now the big secret is out. Green glow hootchies = green back dollars in June. Off to inspect the grounds now.

I fished all of may in Chatham and did ok until I lost 15 feet of iron bark off the bow bucking a northerly to warm springs, I spent a week in Wrangell getting patched up. I fished a couple days there then worked my way down Clarence Not much around Ketchikan, going to head out today may well go back to Wrangell or Chatham. Food for thought we should ask the dept to give us a breakdown of hatchery stock compesition for area's like chatham, icy strait, cross sound, sumner and clarence, if they did this when they gave the weekly reports give us an idea which way the fish may be going. Good fishing.

I just returned from Petersburg. Fun air charters both ways. I talked with Brian for quite a while and it looks like lots of Medevejie Kings around the region, including southern Chatham. Also looking at a good Little Port Walter return of the experimental program comparing new Chickaman stock with the 7 generation stock already there. Things look late around the state, about two weeks, or a set of tides at least.

I counted about 40 boats on the 6 mile- Vitskari line yesterday when I flew in. Lots of jousting going on there as the guys are fishing everywhere from 18-45 fathoms of wire and some are not especially aware of the edge the guy dragging deeper might be on. Seems like the scores vary from 5-30 a day among the good fishermen. My best day there was 14.

The charter fleet reports the king fishing is picking up a bit off shore but still a scratch compared to recent years.

Green for green.

Salty,

I sent you an email through this, think it's called a "private message"

on this site, did you get it? I could re-send in real email if that works

better. I'm looking for some guidance to get started trolling.

Also maybe a point in the direction of someone up there I could ride with

for a day or so to see how the gear is operated. I only know gill netting.

Would be happy to pay for the opportunity to see how it's done.

Nice to hear your tests came back good, I've read all your posts

and find them a wealth of info.

Thanks,

Marshall Scott Warner

Fishing is really poor in Clarence still not sure if there isn't a year class of SSRAA kings missing, gillnetters and seiners cooning kings in Neets Bay however the trollers can't get them to bite. Early run coho have shown up and so have the humpies so hopefully this means coho survival is doing well. Not sure where to start July 1 CRAIG charters not catching so watch out Sitka trollers I may be on Baranoff (did i hear groans not that $#*&hole).

No problem with you coming to Sitka, Tom. I would not stray too far from SC though. I just talked to all my partners who fished yesterday and the best score was five for all day. Great solstice party here last night raising money for Lily Herwald, District 2 State House of Representatives candidate. What a great candidate and a rare ability to bring people together.

Must check private messages now.
