Kolstrand 2 to 1 reduction gurdies

My worn out old stash of pacific king hand gurdy parts is gone and my gurdies are about shot. Pacific King has been out of buissness for about 20 years now, so finding any new parts is out. Plus, I tried out a set of Kolstrand reduction gurdies, and noticed a HUGE difference, and I want some.
I saw a set for sale in the Juneau paper the other day, 1000.00 for the set, but I was to late, I about wanted to cry. Research has lead me to the fact that Kolstrand is now out of buissness too. What few sets there are out there for sale new, are priced like they were made of gold.
My thought is that with things being the way they are in the industry on the west coast, somebody somewhere, has got to be trying to sell a set, but for the life of me I can't find them. I've been watching Craigs List, and what classifieds I thought were appropriate, but so far, no luck.
If somebody knows somebody with a set of these in their garage they'll sell, or stumbles on to some for sale somewhere,I sure would like to hear about it.

I was at Kolstrand's shop in Ballard a week ago... The other business in the same building (same room really) said Kolstrand was being bought out by the employees and was moving offices half a block. I got an impromptu tour of the basement and there was simply an insane amount of good gear down in that leaky old basement.

Who know's what's going on with Kolstrand. I have called and left a message twice this week and have had no response back. Mike Moore at Seattle Marine then told me they were out of business. Hopefully someone opens them back up.

Wow, looks like word or rumors get around fast. The truth is YES, Kolstrand is having financial problems although WE are trying to come back bigger and better. And I'm not saying that those employees who left and started their own business are at fault, but it is not helping our situation. Those of you out there USING the Kolstrand name to build your business and those actually making Replica's of Kolstrand products, GOOD LUCK! NO one in the industry is allowed to use nor has our patterns/or drawings!!! Anyone using Kolstrand's Name and/or pictures are not allowed to do so and will be dealt with legally. If you are looking for Kolstarnd products we can still help you and are working on making an even bigger come back! Those of you who posted blogs on this and any other web sites SHAME ON YOU for trying to promote yourself by making the Kolstrand Name go down. Kolstrand has been around since 1929 and we are not planning on loosing our family business! Thank you to all those loyal Kolstrand Marine Supply Customers through the years, were working on it!!! In the mean time please leave a message at Kolstrand 206-784-2500 or on our cell at 206-365-2500 we will get back to you ASAP!

It's good to hear your company will be staying in buissness. The industry has already lost enough of the legendary equipment manufacturers, and good quality gear is getting harder and harder all the time to find. I'm looking forward to getting my hands on a set of your 2 to 1 reduction gurdies, they really are a very well made peice of equipment.

right...those Kolstrand people are so full of it. I have been calling 'em and leaving messages, without anybody returning the calls. So, don't expect customer service of any sort from those people.

I live in Ballard, and go for walks every day after work, I live around 6 blocks from
the place. I will try to go down there and catch someone to get a "whats up" on
the situation. Looking at a starter boat for myself that will need a set of
gurdys so I've gone by there twice already. I have a gig at the tractor just
down the street in a week or two, hopefully I'll have some real info straight
from the horse's mouth soon.

Hey there I just had a long talk with one of your members about this situation. I am a former Kolstrand employee and have started my own company "Integrity Macnining". We are trying to pick the slack up where we can. I have just outfitted my shop with a CNC Mill, CNC lathe and a conventional lathe that has the capacity to handle some very large work. I hope that I can help out where I can. You can reach our office at 206-288-3596. http://www.integrityseattle.com is not up in running yet, but you can get some more contact info there if you wish.

Clarification:
Integrity Machining does not make Kolstrand parts. If you carefully read the above post, you'll note we claim no such thing.
If you do have marine fabrication needs, we can certainly help you. Give us a call or email. We'll get back to you in a timely fashion.

Kolstrand Follow-up!
Ok, so I found some info you for you guys. The first part addresses yaktyou’s
Concern directly, he can email me or call me if he would like me to get
Some actual names and numbers to get a set of hand gurdys. As far
As the rest of info goes, It’s just what I could find out. I’m not
trying to hurt anyone’s feelings or put out someone’s laundry.
The proceeding post may already do that but I met that guy, he was
nice and I liked him. You can Fallow-up disagreements on your own efforts.
I would like to say that considering that Kolstrand is in Ballard,
the capitol of the Northwestern United States’ fishing industry for
a century, It is important to me to support them as the “real deal”.
However, I don’t know if the present owner is part of the original
family or not so I could just be romanticizing.
The reason this has interest to me aside from becoming a troller is that
looking at starter boats and from fallowing the list’s chatter, finding
gurdys might be something to consider. The boat I just got has 2x4
Simplex so it’s not too big a concern now for me, but it might
be in the future. Ya’ never know..
Kolstrand doesn’t seem to be able to produce any and have them
on the market. So I’m just going to bullet point what I found out,
hope it’s helpful for you guys.
I got lucky a week ago, and found Bruce at the place, the windows
were papered over as they were getting ready to have a “garage
sale” in a week or so.
First off, hand gurdy’s for yak2you:
There were boxes of hand gurdys right there in the front office
area. Probably 30 pairs or more. I saw them with my own eyes,
swear to God. Bruce said $1300 for the 2:1 models. (yipes!!!)
I bet, if you called and made a offer you could get some at a workable price.
The ones I saw in the boxes had the nylon spools, not bronze
like the power models. Yak2you, look in your private in box
to see that I sent you Bruce’s number to call. If someone else
needs it, maybe pass it along. I didn’t really tell Bruce
I would give it out, but I know you wanted some. I live just
a few blocks away so if there is a shipping issue, I can ship
them to you or get them to someone you may know in
the Seattle area. I’m glad to help any way I can. I will
need TONS of help with direction when I start out.
OR…as I also have found out:
They are made by a “retired guy” in his garage, the only part that is an actual
Kolstrand part is the spool. This part could be replicated or one could use
a spool of a different make (simplex, easthope, etc.) and have that put on
the shaft rather then a Kolstrand one. The guy making them would probably
love to sell you some but most likely doesn’t have this part to complete a
set. I’d scrounge up some spools, contact him and you’d probably have
what you’re looking for. Any machinist could fit the spools to the shaft
for you or him.
The building the company is in supposedly is about to change hands
this month, they are having a “garage sale” this weekend (the 23rd)
There is a whole set of (2x4) gurdys waiting to be assembled. You
could buy all the parts and have someone (listed below) assemble
them for you. This might be safest way to get them the soonest.
There are people listed below that certainly assist in assembling
them as they used to work there. THEY ARE BRAND NEW on
the shelf, ready to be put together, I saw them.
There is another complete used set in the basement that the company bought from a
guy who didn’t need them anymore and just figured “whatever you’ll give me for
them…..” working condition unknown. Bruce mentioned these but I was
really interested if there was a way to get a new set. We’ve all see used
ones somewhere or another. Ever seen a new set?
Kolstrand Gurdys:
There are 12 cast parts that are used to make up an assembly. One is used twice to
have an end piece on each end of the shaft, the rest are used for each spool including
a spool. 3 spool set would be 12 x 3 + extra end piece + shaft and motor/manifold.
I didn’t count the shaft as part of the 12 as it doesn’t require the using one of the molds and can be made anywhere etc. The hydraulic motor is a universal part and the last set they made used the same manifold as Simplex. The shaft, motor, and manifold parts are independent of the Kolstrand equation.
The molds for the parts are at Frazer Bronze in Marysville WA. That is where
the cast parts were made. I had heard that the present situation may not
allow more parts to be made currently. When I spoke with Bruce, I didn’t
ask as there was no point, I couldn’t buy what he already had so what
could I care about more parts? If the business is having tough times, I
can be sympathetic. Who hasn’t had problems with the bills?
The Experts:
John Killborn was the “sales guy” at Kolstrand for years and years, sold
tons of their stuff all over. He now works at Seamar in Seattle (ballard).
This is the guy that’s going to have the best info on where you might find
some parts or a set as he knows who he sold “what to who where”.
Leon who now works at JK Fabrication (in ballard) was the machinist
“guru” on these things. He knows just exactly how/what to tweak, adjust,
modify to make these work. If something is not working with yours,
this is the guy who’s going to know “whats up” with it.
Nick Zardis now works at P S Hydraulics in ballard and he was the
guy in charge of the shop and it’s operations. The guy running everything
on the other side of the wall from where the phone isn’t being answered
anymore. He should be a wealth of info too.
KOLSTRAND IS HAVING A “GARAGE SALE” SATURDAY
AUG 23, IF YOU NEED SOMETHING CHOP CHOP.
THE PLACE WAS PACKED WITH PARTS ETC!!!!
hope this was helpful info,
MSW
