To whomever put this site together, thanks!! I have enjoyed reading the thoughts, and looking at the pics from other trollers. I look forward to getting into some helpful discussions about fishing. I'm a junkie. When i'm not out fishing, i'm usually tieing something weird up, or talking about the game. I've been involved in many of alaska's fisheries over the years, and I love them all. Something about King salmon trolling though, winter Kings in particular captivates me. It's a battle of the wits for me. Hunter VS. Hunter.

So, I would love to talk strategy with anyone who wants to. I have a pretty good collection of gear that i've put together over the years, and am willing to disscuss most of it. By the way, Jon, I noticed you were asking about Superiors? Did you find all you needed ? you might try out a place called Englund marine. I also noticed that you run brass/chrome? Do you have alot of trouble with tarnishing? I used brass/chrome for a few years, and was constantly frustrated with tarnish. I tried hydro-tone, copper rings, you name it. Sometimes my spoons would tarnish enough to make unhappy, while out on a 3 hour drag. I eventually went to all gold/chrome, and my troubles went away for the most part. Still though, there are some who feel like b/c fishes better than g/c, and, I had a pretty big stockpile of Brass and didn't know what to do with it. I came up with a brainstorm one day and went and bought a can of clear spray paint. I put a couple of coats over some of my brass/chrome, no more tarnish problems. I liked it so well, that I spray it on all my spoons now. Helps keep the factory paint from chipping on my AC/DC's. anyway, looking forward to lots of chats.

Yak,

Welcome to the forum and thanks for the compliments. I'm glad you like the site :)

I had the same problem with brass/chrome superiors that you had -- when I got to the point of trying anti-freeze to keep them shiny and even that didn't work, I moved to gold/chrome completely. They stay shiny for months. If you are going to polish a spoon, use www.boatersworld.com%2Fproduct%2FMP80810971.htm&cjsku=MP80810971">[url=http://www.jdoqocy.com/click-3797137-10386533?url=http%3A%2F%2Fwww.boatersworld.com%2Fproduct%2FMP80810971.htm&cjsku=MP80810971]Flitz. It's 100x better than the powdery stuff such as Red Bear.

The clear spray paint is a great idea. I know some people won't even touch a spoon with their bare hands (something about fish not liking oil - or fingerprints, lol) and would probably have a heart attack at the thought of spray painting a Superior, but I will certainly be buying some clear paint this year. Thanks for the idea.

I'd be very interested in talking strategy but I have a dinner appt. at the moment... gotta run! :)

Jon,

Even gold/chrome will get this white crust built up in the dimples and corners that won't wipe off. I have found that a calcium/lime cleaner like CLR, cleans them right up, and I avoid abaisives all together. You will want to let your spoons air out a little after you paint them with a clear coat, but they will fish, despite all the heartattacks. When I first started i was fishing out of my gillnet skiff. Alot of the old boys who's brain's I picked had instilled into me not to touch my gear with my barehands, wipe this, and that, gotta soak them in the other. Eventually though, no matter how hard I tried, lack of space would allow for gas/oil contamination on my gear. I noticed that it never really made a diffrence, nor wheather i wore gloves or fished barehanded. Since those days, I of course try to keep my gear as clean as I can, and i'm particular about shirt sleeve wiping as good as a shine as I can have on my silverware before it goes over the side, but I guess I have alot less concern about chemical smells than some. To me, the bottom line is, I've compared pink slips on occassion with some of my more anal mentors, and my painted, CLR soaked spoons don't seem to be holding me back any, and, my gear lasts almost indeffinately. Hard as it's getting to be to find my favorites anymore, I like that.

I've had some luck with superiors, but it seems like around here most folks, including me, seem to have better luck with a g/c Katchamac, or emerald, or a no. 6 needlefish. The needlefish is my personal favorite. I did see the luhr jensen sell out coming, and stocked up, but no matter what, gear goes away. I have been curious to see if there's any truth to the concerns that the new chinese stuff will be thinner or more cheaply made, I hope not.

I talked to one guy from southeast about gear types a while ago, and found it odd how diffrent things seem to work from here to there. Some of the hoochies I like, he didn't care for and vice versa, same with spoons and plugs. He gave me this one black hoochie that he loved to run for kings, I never could catch anything at all with it. purple haze tends to be my go to hoochie, but at times other colors will take over.
