Exploring my options here.Anybody had any experience dragging iron?Curious how that affects the wires temp.,how well it stays down etc.Really getting burned out on sticker shock at the lead box in Murrays.Starting to consider dragging rocks.

If you don't like the lead price then brace for the zinc price, I know that iron used to be used but what i have seen of the size of iron balls they are huge. I get enough rust streaks on ol girl as it is can't imagine using iron for weight. One of the options we may as a fleet have to start thinking about is maybe a purchasing coop for such things as lead zinc and fuel, pretty sure if we were to buy in bulk we could save some money.

Did you notice your post with the smileys from last night disapeared.

Tom,

Thanks for the comeback on that.I think your onto something there as a coop joint venture, getting a bulk price on some of these essentials for the members. That and maybe health insurance too.Just curious how much more bureaucracy we'd have to pay for to make it happen.I pulled the multi smiley post cause I felt I was getting too redundant. All this nasty weather has me comp. nerding more than usuall and given the chance and 1000s of pictures of fishing and all things south east,I could easilly plug this forum.

I just ordered 500 lbs. of lead as part of a group purchase of thousands of pounds. Shipping on boat coming to Alaska. Price was quite a bit cheaper than Murray's . Organize, organize.

$3.00 a lb. WHOW, so much for leaving them on the back deck at night will have to put them in the bunk. Has anybody checked with Bob in Sitka? He has beat the Murry price over the last few years. Maybe the co-op can get a volume deal on a bunch of lead and we can have a pouring party.

Angie and I are going to begin making some cannonballs this coming week. We picked up 600lbs of lead in seattle and are almost finished rounding up all the supplies/tools/etc. For now we're just going to make a batch or two for people we know to see if we like making them and if it's worth doing. If all goes well we are planning to make anywhere from 30 to 150 cannonballs and bring them up to Sitka and Pelican, probably in May. I'll post again here if we are going to have any extras for sale. Pictures coming next week :D

...apparently metal prices are really high, including lead. I talked to a guy in Washington who had 1500+lbs of lead stolen recently. They even stole the wiring going to his shop by cutting it out with an axe!

He's tied up next to me in old thompson. He had some "good" deals as far as the price nowadays, better than M.P. anyway.Got a lead(no pun intended) on a guy in Portland that "says" he'll pour me all the 60s I want for less than $100 each etc.Gonna look into it before I head back up end of Feb.

Been chasing around on some metals sites to see what the lead market is looking like and by all accounts that market is poised to take a dump here soon I guess.Might be as much as 30% or more.Might wait a bit before I stock up.

I called the manufacturer that supplies Murray's and SeaMar in seattle about a month ago. They were at $1.96/lb for resale customers buying more than a standard tonne. Be careful buying in Canada. Your credit card adds an automatic 3% to all transactions these days.

I poured my own cannonballs for a couple of seasons. I got the lead for free and felt very smart. Then my smart wife said the lead fumes were making me dumb. She retired me from the smelting trade. I do not suggest it for most humans.

I think I may just troll in very deep water really fast. It may improve my gear retention.

We might be using axles, old cat parts, engine heads, etc.

When I longlined all winter we always had anchors from all the cannery junk piles on the beaches and had steel balls that the mines used to crush rock with that we welded eyes on, I wonder how they would work Dingle bars would proboly work fine for kings we just have to rethink the lead holders.
