I friend of mine is an avid BB contributor on a sportie site. A few thousand washington guys doing this in a different universe. Anyhow, it amazes me how very few of these characters are conerned about the whole environment. They are worried about their favorite spot but are not overly concerned with conservation as a concept.
I am a conservationist/eco friendly fisherman because I am selfish, not because I am worship the trees. I want to enjoy what I enjoy about life for as long as possible. I want my kids to have the same opportunities to see Alaska as the old timers had. I am thankful that most, not all of the commercial fishers that I lurk around with are of the same philosphy. No small thanks to ADF&G for constraining my short sighted instincts to catch every thing that swims today. Perhaps trollers who operate on small margins and treasure each fish are more likely to conserve all things.
Funny how the sporties get me to think a little more. Damn sporties
Does anyone know if there is grant money or loans for upgrading to fuel efficient and cleaner engines. Alaska resident and otherwise?

Don't know about the sporty comments but let me through out an idea. If somehow we could drive the shaft at trolling speeds on an 110 volt electric motor through a chain or gear setup and power it with the gen set think of how much fuel we could save. On my vessel I have a 6kw gen set which is not used much while I am running a 671 Jimmy for power. Think the idea has merrit but not sure how to create such a drive. Hydraulics might be another way to drive the shaft.

I am not aware of any grant programs (yet) to address fuel efficiency upgrades, but am hearing about some things that might be on the horizon. Will keep my ear to the ground and report if those rumblings turn out to be anything of substance.
