CHIRP : Compressed High Intensity Radiated Pulse . Has anyone had experience with this new sonar technology? It is supposed to give much higher definition in all depths.

By the lack of response it sounds like not many are CHIRPing , CHIRPing is not cheap.

Here's a link to a discussion about CHIRP sonar and prices. http://www.boatingmag.com/gear/electronics/chirp-systems

Sorry about all of the ads that came with it.

Here's a good read about CHIRP sounders, shows why there is potential for 5 to 10x improvement in resolution.

As far as "CHIRPing is not cheap" goes, the furuno DFF1-UHD (a black box CHIRP sounder) MSRP's at $2200, and the FCV295 (not a CHIRP) MSRP's at $3300. Both prices w/o transducer. The difference being that the FCV295 has a display. Whereas the DFF1-UHD is just a black box. Provided you already have Ntec Catch, or NavNet3d to plug it in to, the black box potentially gives a resolution increase, and allows you to use your regular computer screen (bigger than any sounder display) to view your sounder data. I think Ntec charges you for that too, like $400 for the sounder add-on. The DFF1-UHD is probably better for me, as I already have the software & add-on. The truth is that good equipment is not cheap, CHIRP or noCHIRP.

I'm sure Salty will chime in here, but on his advice I did exactly what you describe (Black-box plus Ntec-Catch) and I love it! I have a 24" flat-screen monitor in the wheelhouse and can put the Ntec nav in split-screen with the sounder. The other very nice thing is that besides creating your own bathy, the system also records other parameters like temp and speed etc, So I don't need to take all those paper notes so much anymore. Nice! Expensive, yes. But the difference is amazing. (I was able to extensively map areas like Soapstone last season and by doing so develop some new drags that the other guys were on the radio cautioning me about. Heh! That sounds really cool to be able to create your own bathy. Considering how terrible the charts are for many areas I fish, I could really get used to that!
