Fyi, drove by this boat today. It's on the hard about 100 yards from my boathouse... anyway, there is another boat for sale near it. A 40' Hoquiam hull, prop and shaft, originally a 6-71 and 3:1 trans but no engine or gear now. Set up as a crabber.
Is this a hull worth converting to a troller If a guy could buy It at the right price? If so, what is a good fuel efficient engine/trans combo that people have had success with when swapping out a 6-71?

It'd be a dream to get a good deal on a solid hull, and stick new power, wires, and electronics in it.

So I take it you think the 40' Little Hoquiam is a good trolling platform? What would you power it with? I'm looking around and new power w/gear in the 120HP range is pretty spendy... I was thinking there has to be a million DT466 wrecker engines out there that would work like a champ for this, but not much info on marinizing those.
I called the owner and am meeting him tonight on the boat. Anything specifically to look for?

I'd put in a John Deere 6068 with a twin disc.
Look for rot in the decks, issues with the fuel tanks, what the thru-hulls look like, what the lid on the cabin looks like, etc.
If the price is right, it would be worth it to gut it of all wiring, etc, and start over with new everything. What a sweet boat that would be.
What price tag does he have hanging on it?

$10K.
I think it would be a fun, affordable project and being so close to home I could build it over the next year while I continued to work. But since I've never actually been trolling yet... I'm thinking it would be much smarter to buy a ready-to-fish boat and leave a rebuild of this hull to somebody else. Maybe after I am ready to step up from my first boat to a different one I'll take on a rebuild challenge if I find an appropriate hull.
I actually spoke with a forum member just a little bit ago who happens to be in the neighborhood and is looking at it as I type. Be curious to see what he thought of it. I might meet up with mydona as well this evening to look at it with him.

You're going to create a stampede with that price.

You weren't kidding... I've gotten a few PM's on this one...
I've got some pics and permission from the owner to post them up here with his phone number. Think I'll start a new thread for him in the Boats for Sale section.
What does a 40' hoquiam hull look like? The Marcia K is a smaller Hoquiam, but I think that is more like 42' or 43'. Any examples of this hull in the AK troll fleet?

The Marcia K is listed at 38 on the document, so it's probably similar.

Just an additional bit of info I came across yesterday -
I emailed the owner of Little Hoquiam boats and he said he didn't build this boat, but boats were built under the Hoquiam name before he took over. So if this is actually a "Hoquiam" hull, it predates his purchase of the company in 1971.
Carry on...

I was gonna say that it doesn't look like the other Hoquiam hulls I've seen. Is there a name on it that'll be in the database?

No name on the boat that I saw.
