Ideal stabilizer depth?

I have left my stabilizers set to the depth the previous owner had them at. They are set deeper than I was familiar with, maybe 3 fathoms. And I figured, well he must have run them deep to lessen the chance of them flying out of the water in very rough conditions.

But now, I have realized there are times when you wouldn't want them so deep. Remembering back to when I was a deckhand, we came running off the grounds in big waves and had to get into Lituya Bay. We did this with the stabilizers down. But it seems to me that the bar at Lituya is shallow enough at low water that the stabilizers could dig in under that scenario. And in the conditions we were under, there was no opportunity to fiddle around with the stabilizer depth setting. So I am wondering what others thing is a good depth to run them at.

I am in Oregon or I would send you a photo of how mine are rigged so I can shallow them up from 3 fathoms to about 1. Basically you run another line out your pole to a block about 6 feet or so inside your staby attachment. Go through the block to your staby chain, swivel attachment just above the water line and attach your second haul up. Gives you two lines to your pole reducing strain at one spot, and a nice haul up to shallow the staby up when going into shallow anchorages.

Al Burno had the Sudan rigged this way when I bought it and I liked it so much I have rigged all my mains this way since.

Sounds like a good idea, but I don't quite follow you. Hope you get a chance to post a picture sometime after you return. Thanks.

Basically Salty is saying that that you run a line from the stabies up through a small block that is affixed to the chain that the stabies are on. That way the stabies stay out away from the boat and pull up vertically first. It's probably a good idea if you are running with them partially up to have some way to cleat off that line so that the pressure isn't entirely on your gurdies.

Thanks guys. Clearly muddled description. I will post pictures when I get home. Block is on pole.

In case someone missed it Salty posted his picture over on the "chains or cable" thread.

Function of old age, putting things in the wrong places.

Salty when you haul your stabies do you use that second line at all or do you just throw a grapple and pull it up by the chain?
