Admeasure......again

I'm wondering if anyone who has gone through the admeasure process can answer these questions.

1. In the old threads on admeasure on this forum most everyone said that they had used Bob Best to do the admeasure. I sent an email to his address only to learn that he has passed away. Can anyone recommend another person they have used to do admeasure on a boat in Vancouver?

2. From what I understand, it takes several months to get the admeasure done and the papers issued before you can fish the boat. Is it possible to get the admeasure done while the boat is still in Canada so that it won't take long to get permits/adfg numbers assigned once in the US.

Thanks

I did it and it was very easy! Problem is now you have to go through the Bureau of Shipping in Texas not private measurers. I used Rick Martin out of Wrangell he could explain the new rules

Ditto,

talk to Rick (907) 874-4548 Cell 470-4548

http://WWW.marinesurveyorsofsoutheastalaska.com Your going to have to have somebody from BOS fly up, hotel, pay for the survey and that's just the beginning. He can walk you thru the new process. I suggest if the boat has a decent survey and the seller is motivated to sell, go 10k less than asking price, as I too went thru the process, it was worth it for me since I have a combo boat rigged for trolling and long-ling. it was about 8k in BS paperwork and 2k in expenses to get to northern SE. oh, yes, when you get across the boarder into the US be sure to get a courtesy USCG inspection as Canada has some liberal rules. Rick can do the inspection should you be going thru Wrangell.

I have a new question on this. There seem to be a good number of Canadian boats coming up lately at good prices that even with the new admeasure expenses might make sense. But what if you have a boat admeasured and it doesnt pass? Say the inspector measures 5.5 net tons? Are you SOL?

First of all its just the hold so virtually any boat under 50 ft will pass. You are allowed to Deep Frame the hold which is basicly some 2 by 4's and some plywood! Mine passed easily without deepframing and boats 43ft

The exchange rate is getting favorable too. Good luck guys.

For you guys who got financing, did you have to get it admeasured before you could get a loan on the boat? Was it one of those things where it all happened at once?

Remember the process will cost I figure 10K due to Admeasurement, Customs broker, flights, hotels, ferries in BC and of course lost work time and a good survey.

The admeasure takes time and $. The process might have changed since i did it 6 yrs ago. The purchase and sales agreement should protect the buyer by having a contingency that the boat pass the admeasure. Most 58 footers and under admeasure at less than 5 net tons.

The really issue for those that are financing a canadian built vessel with the State of Alaska is that the vessel must be deregistered from the canadian registry before the Ak Divisions of investments will release funds. And the Canadians wont deregister the vessel untill funds are released. A buyer needs short term financing to close the deal.
