Over the line

I was pushed over the winter line by the tidal current(about 50 yards)right in front of the state fishhawk and he nailed me.Thought my life was over. Was my best day to date that winter, but all were caught way inside the line.Had visions of thousands of $s in fines, confiscated fish(almost 2 dozen),had all manner of worse case senarios going through my head.I begged and pleaded,we plotted my position on the computer,my cursor was right on the line. All he would say is "the line's the line".He didn't write me up on the spot or take my fish, showed up at my place the next day and issued me a warning,as "further review" revealed I was only marginally over the line(about 50 yards),so relieved almost kissed him.Guess what I'm getting at is that line has always intimidated me and I stay well away from it,then as now.Just wondering about these guys that will camp out at times 1/4 mile or better outside the line and spin brodies out there being rewarded in broad daylight and in full view of the fleet with illegally caught fish that count against our quota and the pocket book of those of us fishing legally. What balls ,what hubris. You never hear of them getting nailed.Just wonder who their connections are, cause they're always well inside the line when the bird shows up or the hawks are out. Just an observation.

I know it seems like alot of boats were or are over the line, but in 07 most guys were inside.Otherwise there's more talk on the radio's.B.ut then again I

don't fish the line a whole lot.So I miss most the fray .After F+G protection gave a few warning and citations in05 and06 the winter line guys got the message.

There's always someone whose greedy and there's those unintentional deals where its hard to make the turn because of the crowd spacing, then add the current

exspeccially on a big ebb,oh well.Overall things have improved greatly over the years.

I was impressed by how the fleet in general stayed inside the line the few days I was on it last winter. I was not impressed by a couple of the guys who seem to think they can tack west on the line or just outside of it. But, it is certainly much better than it used to be in the loran days.

Speaking of drag etiquette, don't the guys know you have to shallow up to 42 or so to give yourself room in the corner? Coming in there dragging 45-50 and hoping you can find a spot to turn around when you need to is just asking for a problem. When it is crowded out there I run 42 on my tips and move my heavies up and down depending on where I am on the drag. It is amazing how many fish come on those tips out in 60-70 fathoms.
