Since I didn't want to quietly slip into someone else's post without introducing myself, I thought I'd say hello really quick. It is great to finally have a salmon trolling forum specifically for us. Anyway, I know a few of you already, and just wanted it to be made public that I will be contributing to the forum now that I am aware of it. Thanks F/V Sophia for directing me here, from Facebook of all places.

Hailing out of Pelican, I own the power troller F/V Nightingale, and have been a deck hand for many years on long-liners, trollers, and crabbers. I look forward to reading what this forum has to offer.

Greetings Jon and Joe and Angie!

Stumbled onto this site while looking for a diagram of trolling gear in the water for our Sitka Maritime Heritage Society annual meeting and maritime discussion. This year we are working on a panel and presentation about trolling. Matt Donohoe will have his pictures featured and I (Eric Jordan, F/V I Gotta) will MC. I am also putting together a power pt. slide show to run in one corner about trolling.

So, tell me about the origination of this site. I recognize some people already.

Welcome Eric, i hope you are recoverying well. I also stumbled onto this site and have as you have seen put up quite a few posts, I think Jon on the Gold Dust is the onewho originated it.

In relations to the 2nd advance I talked to Tom Mc. a few weeks ago and he said there was more coming on the chum and that he was being conservative for we still have inventory we are holding to get a better price from.

Hi Jamie. :)

How're things in Pelican? I heard two boats sank from the snow and the wrestling team has been stuck in Juneau for 3 weeks. Of course, those are the tame rumors... I won't go into the crazy ones. :D

Hey Jon!

Although boats did not sink during the repeated snow storms, I'm sure a couple of them were close to that point. I think we had 21 inches in one day last week. Luckily it was of the light and fluffy variety, and was easily removed. Lisianski Inlet is definitely hard on a wooden boat during the winter months. The ice has finally cleared from my back deck, and it was originally at least 4 inches thick because my deck hose was like a bug caught in amber, coiled up in a solid layer of ice.

The wrestling team was stuck in Juneau for quite a while, how long I don't know. But, that's living in a small town on a treacherous coast for you. Even the Alaska State ferry Aurora turned around at Pt. Retreat outside of Juneau because it was in sustained 80 knot winds and 0 degree temperatures, with extreme icing conditions, and they didn't feel they could make the short run to Hoonah safely.

Josh told me you and Angie had bought a new boat. Congratulations! Are you modifying it in any way? Rewiring, rebuilding the engine, etc? This Spring I have an appointment with a welder to clear that annoying hayrack off the back deck of the Nightingale, and replace it with a longline style bait shed. Also I will be putting up new aluminium mast and poles. My old steel mast looks tired, and I don't trust the wooden tips on the trolling poles to hold the extreme downward force of the stabilizers anymore.

I went fishing for kings in November once, but then, of course, I said screw this, I'm wasting time fishing when I could be hiking mountains looking for deer. I got an enormous 3 point in November, it would have won the Sitka buck derby easily if they had let me enter it. No big deal though ;) I know the guys from town did really well in an undisclosed place for kings this Fall, but I didn't participate. Hunting is an obsession for me I guess.

Alright, talk to you later Johnny Wadd!

Jamison,

Has Red showed up in Pelican yet or is he still soaking in some hot springs? Tell him to give Carl a call at 907 223 2390 when convienent. Sounds like you are making some major changes to the boat-- see you on the grounds.

haha, well that's good no boats sank. That's the typical pelican rumor mill for you.

We are still trying to buy the new boat... loans are pretty hard to get right now, especially using the equity in our house because the market is going downhill and all the mortgage companies are scared. My credit score was low too, but I just increased it by a huge amount so I think we can do it soon.

That will be awesome to have all that shiny aluminum on your boat. A good hayrack/baitshed is really key for SE, I know how hate to leave the pilothouse when it's raining ;) Our new boat doesn't have a hayrack at all so we will be wearing full rain gear this season, which is going to suck big time.

Congrats on the 3pt, I bet that was fun getting out of the woods, lol.

Hello Carl and Jon!

First, Red is in California I think. He left on the ferry in mid-January. He said he'll be back up in Pelican in May to get ready to Spring fish. I had some great hikes with Red this Fall, and I really kicked his ass on the mountainside! He pulled off an amazing 300 yard elevated shot on a nice buck in October that I'll remember forever. The buck just didn't stop falling down the mountainside it was so high up. He practically fell into our laps. Carl, I know you and my uncle Bruce Ulrich are buddies, can you tell him I said hello? I haven't seen him in a long time.

Jon, Josh had told me you had bought a fiberglass boat. I won't jinx you and go into it more though. Suffice to say I am excited for you guys! No more caulking, scraping and painting hopefully. Also, I bought my great uncle William Mork's power troll permit in January, an exciting year! Its almost time for me to start deckhanding on the Alitak again, and I have some new gear to stick, its sitting on my living room floor staring at me, so I'll cut this post short.
