Sunnfjord 47

About to buy a 47 sunnfjord in Sitka. I really know nothing about the boats, other than they have a good reputation. How are these hulls? I figure its a 9knot Max boat, probably rolls a bit and beats up wind well. am i right? this is a1979 hull. There appears to be a little rot in a crab tank bulkhead maybe some soft areas in the deck. Are there any other inherent problem areas to check??

Looking for some input on how well these fish and handle.

Check where the mast steps on deck. I looked at several that had low areas in the deck there due to softness underneath since the fish-hold extends underneath the house quite a ways and there's no support from a bulkhead there. Those hulls also usually develop cracks right where the deck meets the hull at the scuppers which is another source of moisture into the structure below. Generally nothing fatal but a labor to fix.

9 knots would be about hull speed with a 45-foot waterline. So you'll more likely see 8.5 or so, assuming a 40-foot waterline. Also depends on how it's powered and the gear ratio and the prop diameter too. Some of them that are Detroit powered are swinging pretty small props. And then there's a trade off between fast cruising speed and being able to troll slow enough without a trolling valve.

I'm probly just adding to the confusion... :-)

Thanks for reply and good info! I'll look at the deck below the mast further.

It is a 165hp 6v71.

Thinking about a QSL 9L as a replacement

Cummins! I like it! Dare to be different! A lot of the guys are installing Deere 6068s which are very efficient too. Put a ZF gear with 4:1 and swing a honkin' dia prop for even more efficiency. And I see that the Canadians have taken to putting bulbous bows on fish-boats even down to the 40-foot length for even more efficiency.

I've good luck with 15k hours of cummins. I love my QSBs.i can not believe I might be giving them up for a jimmy!

You talked to Jim Steffen over there about that boat? He'll be able to give you a no-BS survey when you get that far.

I agree with a very extensive survey before buying. Have it all gone over, and then make your offer.

Thanks for the surveyor contact. I'll give him a ring!

Does anyone have an idea what the value of these are? Is a '79 in decent working order worth 255k??

Ah! This one? http://www.dockstreetbrokers.com/listing_detail.php?id=2239

Looks like somebody cared for it recently. Too bad there's no hay-rack. If you intend to do any freezing or processing you'll need a shelter deck or at least an awning.

MKP

Yup thats it. It does have a hayrack. We wont be freezing or processing, I'm in California we mostly make short trips and slush fish. Maybe someday a spray brine system!

I think there was some discussion on this boat in a different thread a couple years ago. Here it is http://www.salmontrolling.com/viewtopic.php?f=5&t=1254

They may be good reasons it hasnt sold.

Its very nice and I have not seen the inside of it so dont know how it is equipped. The new hayrack on it looks cheap (like mine) in my opinion especially for what kind of boat it is and the price tag. Another Sunfjord 47 (Katie J) sold here in sitka this winter that is WAY more set up, freezer, bait shed and full shelter deck, longline, troll and shrimp ready. I would find out what the price on it was and look it over as a comparison for negotiating and determining the value of the Oasis.

Good luck.

I've tried unsuccessfully to contact that original guy. I'm not sure why it didn't work out.

I looked at the Katie J this week. Also dug up a survey for her. Value was 275k I think...

oops $325k

Is that what it sold for or the valuation from the survey.

Didn't mean to sound so skeptical, just trying to help. Another (47 sunfjord) that sold last year is called the good news. I'm pretty sure its in Juneau. I may even have the owners number if you want it. I can't remember exactly but I think it was in the 200-250 range and very well set up as well but I don't know for how many fisheries. Bottom line is I find it hard to believe that a troller worth 250K should be a project boat but then again you can do the math on what it needs and compare with other similar boats. Sounds like you're on the right track. Those are beautiful boats on the elite end, I wish my lowly troller income could put one in the realm of possibility for me! :)

I was in contact with the owner of this boat http://www.sellyourboat.ca/boats/jabberwock/jabberwock.jsp this winter and while they weren't looking to come down to my price range which could be regarded as "low ball", it seems to be along the same lines as what you are looking for at a much lower cost and very well set up with freezer system. The asking price was 180K.

Any problems getting a boat with a hold that size through the ad-measure process?

MKP

2013-05-24 16:21:57

JYDPDX, yes that was just the survey value. Not the sale value. I'd guess the two would be close...

That's a great looking boat. 180 sounds awesome! Huge fuel and water capacity!

Sure is a nice looking vessel, don't know the history of the boat but I looked at it last summer and it seemed like someone was trying to make it a troller after it's service as a crabber/ seiner. I think the port and starboard saddle fuel tanks were removed for hold modifications maybe the crab tanks. You might want to check out the fuel capacity and where the fuel tanks are situated. I have always heard good things about Sunnfjords though other than a period when a few boats had problem with window installs so you might also want to check the windows and glass around them. Well good luck, hope it turns out for you. Oh lots of 671 fans out there, old reliable.

Awesome package. Unfortunately, I need a bite more boat for crabbing.

Having crewed and maintained that vintage Sunnfjord for over 10 seasons, what I suggest is that you also crawl around the stern tanks to see if the steel his giving way at the top and allowing water to seep in, the other thing is either in the crab tank or main hold there should be a hatch so you can grease the pilar bearing, spin the shaft and see it it is true if not and you hear a knocking, your up for a stearn bear and resleaving that bearing. If it is all good, you can run from the zerk fiting tubing into the engine room and grease from there beats jumping down in the hold with a grease gun and you'll be in the engine room anyway......

MKP

2013-05-27 17:02:39

Fveureka, you crewed on the oasis or a similar boat? The shaft was reportedly done a year of so ago.

fveureka

2013-05-27 18:18:57

I crewed the Sundee Lynn aka West Bank owned by Rich Davis now and I currently own a troller/pot boat out of Juneau named the Tellus. If the boat your looking at had the shaft work done, then the intermediate bearing/pilar and stearn bearing most likely got done too. Do check the stern tanks....Those 47's are great sea boats in the gulf trolling/longlining, hauling pots inside and gillnetting.
