Its staggering how much is mislabeled, this should be a criminal. They are not "accidentally" labeling inferior fish as a higher quality fish. They are passing off stuff they can get for cheap as the genuine article to make higher profits. This has to stop! I would like to know how much of the "correctly" labeled salmon is vaguely labeled. Meaning not a bold faced lie but….. Might be more telling for our fishery. Clearly retailers and restrantuers understand and utilize the profitable benefits of mislabeling and realize there are minimal if any consequences. I'd be wiling to extrapolate that they also see the benefit in labeling or passing off lesser quality salmon as "Wild Alaska Salmon". This phenomenon can only create more profit margin on cheap fish on the retail end, at our (genuine top quality producers) expense.

In my opinion, we really need to take advantage of this. This is a GOOD thing for trollers, as people discover that troll caught fish are exactly what they are, and everything else out there is a roll of the dice, IMO. We need to market the crap out of our fish, as you can't mislable what's coming out of SPC or some other suppliers. It's a sure thing for the organic food folks out there.
One thing intestesting here in Craig.. Our local Alaska Commercial produce sucks, and it's basically a roll of the dice by the time you eat it.. so all the gals, including mine are part of a produce co-op of sorts. They get the fresh, organic vegi's sent up from an outfit down in Oregon. I think they pay 50 cents a pound for shipping. It's really good stuff, and we gladly pay a bit more, for the real deal.
What do we need to do to get similar groups down south to form, and get regular shipments of troll caught fish from SE AK? Or do they? I can't see why more healthy eaters wouldn't want the ability to have orders of fresh, vacuum packed salmon showing up once a month... it'd be a sure thing compared to what they'd get at costco or the grocery store.

I think that at least one of the co-op group that operate out of Oregon (it might be the same one your thinking of) sells frozen SPC fish. If we didn't already have all the seafood we could handle, I would probably be getting it from them. I agree, this study is a good thing. Also, thanks for joining the chorus. A.C. SUCKS!! A.C. SUCKS!! Usually I give any store leeway for operating in a remote area, but they really cross a line with their prices and lack of quality and choices. My uncle in Michigan called me and wanted to know more about what was being plastered all over the television about mislabeled seafood. This is getting a lot more press than we could ever have been able to drum up. I don't know if it will actually help us, but it is nice to see this issue shoved into the spotlight.

The IKEA horse meat scandal is over flowing into Canada and some of the stories are including "seafood" mislabeling in the the titles
