I have been on the grid today replacing some zinks and I have noticed a little play in the lower bearing. How concerned should I be with this? Do I have to drop the rudder to replace the bearing? There are four bolts that surround the bearing that I believe hold the bearing housing. Is this just a matter of removing the bolts, the bearing housing and machining a new bearing. Just looking for some advice!
There are also, what looks like two allen set screws on each side.

How much is a little and what kind of bearing is it. It is real common for it to be a cutoff piece of cutlas bearing. If that is the case an 1/8" or slightly more is normal, but we need to know what kind of bearing you have to be certain.

It is over 1/8 but under 1/2 of a inch of play and it doesn't appear to be a part of a cutlas bearing. If it is a cutlas bearing there is no visible rubber left!

I think that you might have found your problem. The rubbers most likely gone. I don't suppose you have a pic I hate to steer you in the wrong direction.? Not likely oh well. I think you should have somebody closer look at it. :)
