Pole Stays

Hello everyone,

My wife and I made it through our first season of trolling and are looking forward to the upcoming season! Thank you for all the help and patience from the fleet. Currently we are trying to redo our cable stays so that we don't have to tension them everytime we raise or lower our poles. I was hoping that someone might have some input about where to anchor the stays fore and aft. We would like to make the cable stays work for a while longer before converting to hard stays, so any suggestions are appreciated.

Thank you.

Hi Brant, Welcome!

With cable stays, the trick is to try to get the lower mounts all on the same plane as the pole hinge pivot. That means that the anchor-point on the bow generally needs to be quite low. These pictures from the Photos thread on the forum show what I mean. http://www.salmontrolling.com/viewtopic.php?f=11&t=2184

They put chain and rubber hose over the first few feet at the bow to protect the rail.

Thanks!

Welcome Brant,

Are you talking main poles or bow poles or both? After living with cable stays for years the conversion to hard aluminum pipe stay and then a stiffener on the main poles have been so nice. Also a chicken wing for the back stay along with the hard aluminum plus the three cable stays for the outer reaches of the pole make it really secure. Good turnbuckles to adjust as needed are also nice.

On the bow poles there is a magic spot where both the front stay and back stay are triangulated so they are tight both when the poles are up and when they are down. Took me a while to find it on my boat as the forestay was pretty much set on the anchor roller. Really cool when I found it and the stays are tight both up and down without any adjustment.

Great, thanks for the warm welcome and helpful info. This should give me a good start.
