Here is my comment to Alaska Dispatch:

The bright side of this, and I am a commercial salmon troller who sells hundreds of Chinook salmon a year, is that marketers are finally realizing that Chinook genes are what they want to get into the farmed salmon. The problem is that these Atlantic farmed raised salmon will still not taste like, have the texture of, or the natural color of a wild Chinook.

If this works out though maybe we can start putting Chinook growth genes into our wild sockeye. Wouldn't that be cool, a fifty pound sockeye going airborne at the end of the leader. Or maybe we can put the sockeye red flesh color genes into the chums. A 10 pound brite chum with its delicate chum flavor and the dark red color of a sockeye.

Or maybe there isn't a brite side.

The bright side is that since labeling of GMO food isn't allowed, there is no way to know whether that farmed salmon is GMO or not. If you want to be sure, you need to buy wild. This is one of the main reasons why I try to buy organic food when possible, it's the only way to know that something isn't GMO.

Drew, you have got it right, the food industry is not interested in your health so much generating a healthier bottom line for their industry. Genetically altered food is not tested on humans before it is supplied to the consumer. That would be too expensive and may be too revealing. Wheat has been so genetically changed over the past 50 years that it is now not even close to the wheat used by our ancestors. If you want to learn more about this and wheat's health impacts read "Wheat Belly" by William Davis MD. You will be surprised. Genetically altering fish could have similar health impacts, no one knows or cares. If you eat it you are the experiment.

One of the dangers of the GMO salmon is that it could cause fish allergies. That is why you see so many gluten intolerant people suddenly now is because of the GMO wheat. If people are allergic to fish they won't be buying any wild salmon any more.
