hold capacity questions/freezer questions

I'm looking at a Canadian built boat and there seems to be some descrepancy regarding the hold capacity. This is an important factor in the fisheries I'm looking at participating in. The dimensions are as follows:

3 crossings 1ofeet by 4 feet by 44 inches.

1 crossing has the plate freezer unit full height on either side of the slaughter pit.

My main concern is the capacity for holding tuna.

Just need an idea of how manyy tons this will hold.

Also I am looking for ideas on who to call to evaluate the freezer system. The boat is in Port Townsend. If what's there will work that would be great, but i don't want to be under-gunned in terms of freezing capacity, nor do I want to be sold a unit I dont' need. Does anyone know of someone who can give me a fair assessment of whats there and what it's capability would be? I don't mind paying a little for the advice.

Many Thanks,

The last I knew under the Jones act, the larges compasidy a forgin built hull could have is 5 tons, or 10,000 lbs. the freezer system I would have to suggest you call in a pro. to check that out, is it spray brine or blast or plate ?? they all have advantages and disadvantages, when all is said at the dock.

Using "interesting math" almost any boat can fit in under the 5 ton rule. So I'm guessing that this one can hold over 5 tons. Calcualtions on the cu footage come up to about 500 cu ft. I'm not sure if there is a conversion that one can use for cu ft/tons for hold capacity, but this would be helpful. I found someone to evaluate the freezer system, so hopefully it will come out good.

Joe,

That sounds like a good size hold, I have seen several boats listed from Canada, with about the same spec's your talking about, some are really very nice. I did talk to one surver that does the admesurments, for US documation, of Canadian boats, the price was not too bad over all for his services, and one point he did bring up was the hold could be reduced in size to meet the US requirements, and whom says you could not un-do the modifications to get back what your buying ???

Pacific Boat Brokers has a good selection, along with a few others, I found a steel hull that a guy has in Oragon, but he had his head up his rear end when I spoke to him.
