Dory Rigging

bartender

Hi folks, I'm new to the forum and commercial trolling. I recently purchased a 27' Westport Bartender with crab and salmon permits. I will be fishing Northern California, mostly out of SF.

The boat is F/V Happy Trails and was fished out of Bodega for many years. It is rigged with two-spool gurdies, and eucalyptus poles. I am repairing the boat now (Rewire, trans, hydros, plumbing, bottom, etc.) and hope to fish at least the tail end of the season. The mast was wrecked at the boatyard, so it will likely be rod and reel this year.

My longer-term idea is to have a trailerable and quick to deploy (While solo) rig while still utilizing the gurdies. I can usually only fish weekends during salmon season, and I want to be able trailer to the bite.

Any thoughts about running extended davits and perhaps a small rack/ arch with a block for a center line? In other words, no long poles or mast that exceeds 14' high on trailer. Maybe some dory folks and hand trollers could chime in. Thanks very much.

Perhaps a drop down frame instead of a mast, the base of the frame on the port and starboard rail swivel up/down and is supported with stays when upright.

And I suggest going with poles running 4 lines. Nothing worse than messing with tangled lines when you get into a bite....

Have you ever seen the rectratable fiberglass flag poles ?? I run one for the high loads I escort in the lower 48, they are strong and easly rigged up. and at even 75 mph they do not bend or break, and I have hit some bridges very hard.
