How big of a fish hold?

Hi all,

I am in the process of rebuilding the fishbox on my dory. The old fiberglass was peeling, and there was a bit of rot in the hull...

Anyhow, I'm considering expanding the hold back one frame, which will give me roughly 35 cubic feet of hold. Is this big enough for a day troller on the Oregon coast? I'll likely be fishing 16-20 spreads.

Thanks in advance,

Greg

Anyone? Anyone have any idea how big I need for a day trip boat? I'm going to be cutting out parts tomorrow, would really like some guidance.

I'll take a stab... Afull tote packs about 70 kings and right now 20 fish a day is pretty good. 35cu' will give you ample room for a good bite in the summer. I would seriously consider insulating the hold and going with slush for quality and to avoid having to deliver everyday.

Greg, you should be fine with 35 cubic feet on a day trip dory. I agree with lone eagle, install a slush tank or better rsw tank, no waiting for ice for dry hold or slush tank.

How long can you keep them in slush or RSW?

Paul, we keep ours no more than three days in a tank, same for RSW.

I'm going to show my newness here, but what is a slush tank? Ice with salt water to form slush? Is there any special equipment required?

Don't use fresh water....and keep it thick so the fish don't move on you....scale loss will cost you$$. no equipment required

Lone Eagle has it right for dressed salmon in calm water. Also put the fish in so all the noses are pointed the same way. With early coho or round salmon I do not use a thick slush as it will scale early coho on the ocean, and freeze the eggs in round salmon. I add ice as needed to keep the water chilled. The fish are not in the slush, but in the cold water below the slush layer.

I hope this helps.
