Was thinking about what has worked for my crew and myself concerning health and keeping ones perforance up and consistant. So I came up with a few small things that have helped us keep it together during the season.
One :I'd like to thank our passed fishing friend Donnie Dix for his Devils club salve. You rub it on an a stressed area, wrist, forearms, lately my knee it offers relief to the area. After one of those big coho days it really helps the high use spots relax and I believe it also heals also. You can get salve in Sitka I believe. Two:wrist bands it strange how something so simple works so well.I get mine though Conney from Madison Wi. #030136.Its a single wrap velcro band.If I don't start the day on the deck my wrist start that Carpal tunnel thang.Lots better then Ibeporfin every day.
Three :for cramps and a more restful nights sleep after a day of heavy conking I use a Magnesium-Calcium powder mixed in warm water. The health food stores usally have it,it goes by the name of Calm.Man there's nothing worst then that bad ass leg cramp in the middle of night.Somehow if your muscle are kinda jittery it helps balance you out for that good nights rest.
Four:black cod soup, man that soup offers a lot.You can add whatever, but I use potatoes, onions, garlic and black cod collars or tips,I can't really say it heals you but it does sustain you on a long day.It is so nourishing and it keeps you regular.Something about all that high energy fat.

I appreciate the information. My family has used devils club salve for minor infections and skin irritations for a while now, but I had never thought of it as an anti-inflammatory. I will be sure to give it a try next time I have an overused joint giving me trouble. I've found that eating canned salmon bones, skin and fat and meat is a good way to get the minerals that you need, but that black cod soup you described makes the Norwegian in me drool. I don't get much access to sablefish, but maybe I will try to have a supply of it around this summer. Try to to take some fresh greens and carrots with you too, I've found that eating fish and salad regularly makes a big difference as to how you feel at the end of a trip.

The best thing is to stop catching so many fish. I think I will add a new line to the "you know you are a lowliner when": You know you are a lowliner when all your highline peers are dealing with tunnel carpal and tennis elbow and your arms and hands are just fine.
My physical therapist tells me that wearing the strap below your elbow really helps with the arm/elbow pain. It also really helps to have good crew who do most of the conking while you monitor the radio channels and autopilot jog switch.
