I need advice on products to sound proof my engine room. I've had trouble finding actual lead/foam composites everything is vinyl/foam. I can find sheet lead. Would this really be a health hazard in the engine room. And is vinyl really as good as they say as replacement for lead. Please help before I go completely deaf!

I did a few things that really helped:

1: Go to a quiet 4 cycle diesel like a John Deere from a 453 screaming jimmy.

2: Put on a really good muffler.

3. Sound insulate the whole engine room with the best stuff available, I don't think you need lead.

4. Lay a very heavy sound insulating pad over the floor of the engine room.

5. Cover your insulating pad with a very heavy industrial carpet.

6. Plumb your hydraulics so they don't howl.

8. Find the fish so you are in the cockpit, as far away from the noise as possible.

9. Get a set of sound silencing headphones, like Bose, and wear them. (Be sure to turn them off every time your wife wants your attention.)

Seven removed due to fishing secrecy reasons, ask me personally.

You might want to look at Barrier 104 its foam ,lead, foam, foil. withstands temps to 450f. I put a butane torche to it and it held up for about ten seconds before degrading. Comes in sheets 32x 64 from Ballard Insulation in Seattle $ 65 . Just finished lining my engine room with it. Easy too cut and mounts nicely with a screw and fender washer.. I had a Detriot screamer and the best cheap fix I found was 3/4" rubber horse stall mats cut to fit the floor pan. I found the rubber mats in Juneau at Western Auto. $50 for a 48x 72 sheet.

Barrier 104 is what I put in under the floor.
