Going to look at a boat in Port Townsend tomorrow. It's a 42' glass freezer boat listed on Dock Street. The boat is a Canadian vessel originally built by Seamaster Builder and Repairs in Maple Ridge BC. It has a Gardner main that powers the whole deal (boat, refer, and generator). Any input good or bad would be greatly appreciated.

Thanks,

Joe

The Gardner has an exclent repuatition as a reliable engine, and what little I know about them you can kill a couple of clyinders for better fuel econemy. one draw back is they are no longer made, but parts are readly available rather expencive though!

Gardners are also a long stroke, slow turning engine, IE 16-1800 rpm, rather high torque, and seem to actully work best with a variable pitch prop. They also break down into about 3 major componets if I remember the site I found a while ago, much like your europen ship engines, crank base, top crank plate, clyinder block, and heads, external fuel pump and lines, readly accessable injectors.

first one I seen was out of the vessel, and the owner explained to me how on this engine, he had he could cut the fuel to different clyinders, and relise the compression for better econemy.

I have been thinking on maybe building a troller for the Tuna fishery, and my first choise would be the gardner for main power, but alas I am not sure it would meet EPA tier 2 requirments or could be adopted to them.

How can anyone afford the asking price on these boats?

I have a sister ship to this boat. Same year and builder. The specs on dockstreet are somewhat inaccurate. The boat is more like 12'6 wide, and packs, at most, 12-15k frozen salmon. I had a quick look at this boat when I bought mine in Canada a few years ago, and it seemed to be in really good shape. The weak spot on these boats is the deck. Glass ( a lot of it) over plywood and fir frames. Give the pole mounts and any other deck penetrations a good looking over. House is molded, with no structural wood in it. Dont remember any specifics on the refrigeration, but it looks like a relatively new compressor at least... make sure it will do what you want it to so far as core temps and daily freezing capabilities, or you will be fighting it until you replace it.

Love the way my boat rides. Super heavy built boat, and though I dont have rolling chocks on mine, it still rides well. These boats have a pretty bluff bow, so they dont buck real well. Other than that, nice on the water.

Overall, great hulls. Cant speak to the Gardner, as I have a Jimmy in mine. I think most people who have Gardeners like them, though it must be a bit difficult to find parts for them.
