I like to buy 900 ft rolls. That is enough to put 75 fms/ spools. The reasoning is that it will keep the spool full, which make them a bit faster (having extra backing at the core). Also after a few years you can up-end (move the worn top half to the bottom) and have fresh wire on the top. 3) if (when) you brake/badly kink a wire you'll still have enough to keep fishing. 4) when you get a lead hung you'll have extra time to stop the boat, pull the other wires and turn on the drag and hope you can back the lead off the hang-up. I generally fish 20 - 40 fms and sometimes 50. PS I like to use a buoy w/ a pulley on the wire, float it out while in gear and the top tied at the hay-rack,and when the spool is empty the bag should be out 1/2 of the wire's length. tie the top to the core of the spool put the boat back in gear and reel it in. Being in gear will help get the wire back on good and tight.
