I am curious if there has ever been any ideas in the wide world of salmon marketing to label fish with a number that gives the fuel used to catch that one fish? I am sure that there are some folks who would be quite surprised at the fuel effort used to catch the king on their plate or in the diner. It might be even an incentive to get more fuel efficient engines installed.

Complex subject as there is such a wide range of fuel consumption related to trolling. I just looked at my pounds per gallon for last year and it comes out to about 75 pounds of salmon per gallon of fuel.
Of course every fishery and every week is different within the troll fishery. My pounds per gallon is less in the winter Chinook fishery than it is in the summer pink and chum fishery. A rough calculation for me this winter was one Chinook per gallon.
Fuel costs for my operation have been around 5% of gross sales. Been edging over that recently.
But then trolling is not just a "commercial" venture for some of us. It also has a "recreational, spiritual, subsistence, and goofing off value."
Off to change my oil.
