Hi All:

I'm sorry to report that Richard 'Dick' Eliason, Alaska-born skipper of the Karmon Dee, Sitka neighbor, and esteemed former President of the Alaska Senate, passed away Sunday night.

Dick was one of Alaska's giants. As a state legislator he is probably most remembered in our industry for his work with Rep. Ben Grussendorf to secure the ban on fish farming in state waters. But he did so much more than that. He was a guardian of Alaska's interests on a great many fronts and helped to mold Alaska into the great state that it is today. He was a wonderful friend, family man, and mentor to many of us.

On behalf of myself and ATA, our thoughts and prayers are with the Eliason Clan and Dick's many friends who are feeling this loss.

It's been a tough year already when it comes to losing our fleet legends. Don't forget to drop by and lend a hand or listen to an elders stories - remind them how much they are valued today and always.

Peace.

Dick was a very nice man on all levels. He understood and staunchly defended the value of wild stocks like few others that have held seats in our Alaska Legislature. His vision and involvement in fisheries legislation and management has benefited each and every participant in our industry. He will be sorely missed.

I remember asking an aide of Senator Eliason what she really thought of him. She said "Dick is the most wonderful man". We were so lucky to have him in our industry, our community, and our State. His children carry on his legacy of decency and leadership.
