A reminder.....part of the new rules concerning anyone fishing beyond 3 miles, I understand It Is required to have a certificate showing you have completed the "Drill conductor coarse"....I spoke with, I believe It was Mary this morning @ AMSEA, so far I am the only one registered for the coarse taking place on Jan. 20th. here In Sitka. I see there Is a coarse In Juneau tomorrow (Jan. 15th). Amsea.org has a list of times & location of upcoming classes. They need a few more participants than just me to hold a class...Its' free to crew or skippers.....Its' @ the NSRAA building @ 0800...I'll bring the venison jerky...

I took the class yesterday in Juneau, and was glad I did. Most of the people in the room had been fishing for some time, but it's always good to get a refresher.

I'm taking it in March here in Oregon. I'm impressed that they were able to fund grants so that we all get to take it for free.

Was that the 10 hr or the 18 hr course? Is this card required for boats (and non commercial) who are not fishing, just in transit through the 3 mile doughnut holes? Is the CPR/Mariner's 1st aid card still required and did you get that included in the class? I'm just wondering how many other "drills/requirements" cards I have let laps over the years? Common sense tells me each new crew member be told where the gumby suit is and a chance to try one on in the water, EPERB's functions, gears/throttles, pumps, over board recovery plans, tru hulls, 1st aid pack-books,VHF procedures, Lat/Lon readings...etc.. I have requested a course be taught on Prince of Wales Is and hope that more P O W residents will make this request too. FYI- Hollis to Ktn ferry is $46 (walk on one way) plus $80 +/- motel + meals. The pass from Port Protection to Craig is closed for the winter, so I'm not sure what my friends up there are going to do? 18" new snow this wkend and still snowing.

Thanks Jim..
Mydona the link Jim posted will answer a lot of your questions about the coarse....as far as the 'coasties' boarding you while In the middle of a donut hole ..I would hope they wouldn't bother you. I believe Its' the EE zone they may be particular about. That would be my guess, not based on any facts. I bet If enough fishermen from Port Protection were signed up for a coarse they would come to them, they are an accomodating group @ AMSEA & want to help....Again though, un-educated guess....
