A brand new troller, talk about optimism!

One day on a swing through the South end I stopped by the Sunnfjord yard.

Low and behold there was a NEW TROLLER poking out of the shed.

You can imagine my amazement at seeing a new one being built. I went in and talked to the

couple who commissioned it, they were nice. As I recall they hadn’t been trolling for very

many years yet, they had their starter boat for sale at the time. This boat got a small write up in one of the commercial magazines, I think Pacific Fishing, which is my preference of the three.

(Are there some more publications about commercial fishing I should be getting as well? )

Anyway,…. I made a swing through there again the other day to get some pics of it in the water, talked to the head of Sunnfjord for a couple of seconds. He was saying this kit or “dry boat” is around 400K. That’s a running boat with all the interior finishing still to be done. Finished out ready to go would be around 500K.

You have to have some respect for someone’s optimism and fortitude to actually commission a new troller. Yes we’ve all seen the new seiners and seiner size combinations boats, but paying for a new boat trolling would seem a big nut to crack. Of course it must be nice to have it “your way”. When was the last time someone commissioned a new troller? Does anyone have a boat newer

then the 80s? I think it's great that someone is bringing a new boat to the fleet.

How do you make a small fortune fishing? Start with a large fortune.

Well at least we all know what to aim for now when comparing used and new boats.

I'd outfit that boat with the Steyr hybrid electric propulsion package (since I am dreaming). At trolling speeds it would be pure electric power...

Yes he is, I known him since 1984. In 1986 I bought a glass gill netter from him and still am using it. I then traded my wood boat for forty acres out of Ninilchik.

We both fished in Kodiak and still hold Cook Inlet cards.

I stopped by Thursday and visited, it is a nice boat.

About four years ago we were talking about how hard it was keeping crew sober and on the boat. The subject of Power Trolling came up and here we are.

I went the other way, I put money down on the Heritage out of Hoonah.

First off I need to say hello and thanks to all who make this forum possible, it is a very interesting business you guys are in. I am a long time a "lurker" around here (read only) and a amateur salmon fisherman at best  . Anyway sorry for dredging up a old post and asking a stupid question but I could not help but wonder when I came across this post if that new boat would serve more than just the salmon fishing industry? You guys are in a tough business and I was thinking that maybe in the name of economic viability this boat was built on the same concept as the little 48 foot "combos", (multi purpose commercial fishing boats) Fred Whal is building down in Reedsport Oregon? (see link below)

Thanks in advance for entertaining my question.

Have to admit, that it is a very good looking vessel and probley well thought out. I will admit I have fished just one time for salmon, and that was on the sport end.

Since I have joined the fourm, I have picked up so many good ideas, and can not thank you all enough!!

I thought process on a workable troller, is different then some I have seen, yet keep in mind I am thinking more on the lines of Tuna, then salmon. and a second thought on ling cod, OK I am crazy, but just the same again I thank you all on the great information found here that was not available else where. I thought I would also add a concept to the collection now that we are on the new boat subject.

Some how for some reason I suspect there was more than troll money invested in this boat and the payments.

Yes Salty there is, He gillnetted in Cook Inlet last summer with it, did well. Last August he told me that he sold his Inlet permit and was heading to SE between storms. Mine is still on the market.
