Probably the reverse thrust bearing, best let a pro look at or listen to it. Best before metal shavings show up in the base.

thanks for the reply, I was thinking that too, but then reverse is used so little that I thought it shouln't fail before forward. Looking for a way to avoid more work in the engine room....

Checks for he 2000 series capitol gear

check fluid level.

Inside the switch valve is a series of ports make sure all are clean and not full of gunk.

In the bottom of the pan is a filter, inside the suction line to the switch valve, disconnect hose and clean screen.

be sure to drain fluid first.

if that does not fix it, check the pump itself u can pull it off and run the shaft with a high speed gear, u will be able to hear if its the gears or bearings in the hydraulic pump.

short of digging into the thing thats all u can do.

the main shaft and bearings tend wear out leaking oil back into the plates.

if all fails...

practice landing without reverse

I never thought of it being a hydraulic problem, I'll dig alittle deeper before pulling it. Thanks for the input

How did it go?

I removed the selector and its clean, the oil was clean but I couldn't remove the pump fully because the shaft flange is too big!. I'll pull the boat in the spring and then attack it again. I do have another pump but if that is the problem wouldn't it be running loud in forward as well as reverse? I'll let you know the'fix' but I'm gonna wait 'till I'm out of the water so I don't get myself in trouble....

I had this same problem but I talked to Buckland in Sitka and he said and he isn't the only ,but Capitol gears make a wine when they are in reverse. Just as long as your pressure is good the gear is good. They do however need to be warmed up before leave the dock or else there will be a delay in the response from the gear.
