I'm looking at buying a wooden 38' troller. By all accounts it has a reputation for generally being well-kept and in good shape. I've read numerous thoughts on the topic here, but thought I would pose a few questions fresh:
-is financing possible on a wood boat?
-is insurance possible?
-if you were buying one, who would you ask to do the appraisal?
Thanks for any thoughts.

Yes financing is possible. I would choose a more local bank or credit union rather a large nationwide bank like B of A. Local banks are a little more understanding of small business and especially fishermans circumstances. Insurance is also obtainable but not the easiest to get. For both you will need a vessel survey that comes out well. I have insurance on my wood boat through Ervin & Bong. 1800 399 4872. I would recommend getting your survey done by Stephen at Norcoast Marine Surveyors. He is a well respected guy that really knows his stuff about wood boats because he used to be a shipwrite. That's a good looking boat your trying to get and I'm sure you won't have to much trouble obtaining it.

Thanks for the response, that's good info. I actually misspoke a bit...I am looking to buy a troller, but this is just one of a couple I'm looking at. It's the only wood one though, so I appreciate your comments.

A word of non referral for anyone looking for a marine survey.
I could not be more displeased with my experience with Rick Martin of Greenwater Marine Surveyors. We agreed that snce the boat was in the water that he do the topside stuff first and then when the tides were right for the grid (a couple days later) do the hull inspection. The guy spent about an hour telling me what a steal the boat was, then typed up some paper work on incredibly basic specs and charged me $600. Upon getting on the grid he told me it would cost another $600 because he'd have to come back. Ok. So now a complete survey cost $1200??? There were so many no-brainers he missed on the topside his opinion on the hull was probably worthless anyway. Sorry to go off topic but I had to get this out there.
That's a pretty nice looking boat from the pics. Good luck.

Well, a 'steer clear' message is as valuable as a recommendation. Maybe more so. Thanks....
Turns out, so many people have told me to avoid wood hulls, I'm probably going to keep looking and find a glass boat. I do love this one though...

Anyone have recommendations for a good surveyor/appraisor for wood vessels?

I spoke to the owner of this boat this morning and apparently a few people who are interested in the boat have seen it posted here. If anyone here wants any of my pics of it, just send me a msg. I think the owner isn't too email savvy so I'd be happy to pass along the pics I've taken.

It's in Craig. Think they want 48k for it. I prowled around it a bit with the owner and it seems in great shape.

if this is the sister ship to the "advance", 47' troller (owned it in the 80's and early 90's) out of eureka, then it is a good boat. believe it was built in toledo, or.
