Will she fish?

I am looking at this boat to re-fit to trolling duty. The owner has told me it is either a Monk or Mathews 37’ hull. By the reel in the pic you can see it is not trolling now. It needs a lot of TLC but I have at least another year until I can seriously fish with her and have the time to do the repairs.

What do you think, would this be a good hull to start Troller project?

I would say looking at the side of the stern it was built as a troller in its beginning most likely, and yes, it looks like it would make a great troller again. Very close to a monk design in my opinion. Nice looking boat, hull has good lines.

That hull sure looks like mine which is a monk design put together in Port Angeles. 37 feet overall, 11 wide?

Thanks for the feedback. It looks like it would be worth looking at this boat further. It now has a tired perkins 6.354.4 in it which i think is a 135HP motor, is that enough motor or should I think replace with something bigger rather than rebuild?

good fishing to ya...

The perkins will be adequate power. Hull speed is about 7.5 knots or so. I had that perkins engine in a previous boat. In this boat I have had a 453 GM Diesel and now have a 6806 (I think that is the number) John Deere which I highly recommend.

When ballasted properly these boats are a great sea boat for their size. They buck very well into about 25 knots. They will roll and I recommend stabalizers when on the ocean. Quarter on the stern is the worst ride.

Have mine in the yard today so I am familiar with the look of the hull.

This definately looks like Salty's hull. What is interesting is that it looks like this boat has more of a horseshoe stern where-as most of these hulls have transom sterns (as far as I know).

It also looks like it has nice high bulwarks, which is great for keeping people onboard. However it decreases the hold capacity below deck.

Salty, does the I Gotta have a similar deck height (relative to the lower guard)?

Regardless, these hulls make great coastal trollers. It is very economical to operate and a sea kindly design. Nice find.

Sven,

All these boats were put together a little differently, customized. I believe you have a good point that the way it looks in the picture my scuppers are a bit higher relative to the lower guard than the boat pictured.

Salty do you have any pics of the Apex? I suspect it is a very similar cabin.
