If you are told the hottest length of your tailleader is say 40 inches. Does this mean 40 inches to the start of the hook or overall length including the hook??

Kalitan,

Tail leaders are not measured in inches you old lowliner. Tail leaders are measured from the tip of the finger holding the leader to the armpit, near nipple, far nipple, or far armpit depending on the species, stock, what the salmon are feeding on, season, flasher, lure etc. I just measured mine for you. 34" to near nipple, 44" to far nipple, 48" to far armpit, 56' to far elbow, 72" to far finger.

That is the leader length before attaching with knot, sleeve, or whatever.

I asked one old highliner what his hootchie tail leader was and he told me it was the distance from his fathometer to the starboard bulkhead in front of the captains seat. Once you find a distance, whether it be near or far nipple or window width or whatever that works keep it in mind because someday that length will likely become hot again.

I never did find a hot length this winter season but I just went out and measured the different lengths on my hootchies, spoons behind the flasher, and bait hooks. The shortest was 28" loop to hook, and the longest was 72" loop to swivel. I think that covers everything from near armpit to far finger. I understand that in most years a tail leader length in that range will be the "hot" length.

I tried measuring mine with body parts but my double chin kept getting in the way.

Tail leader. I always use the hook bottom to the end of leader Carl. The hootchie hanging back there beyond the hook adds another inch+ that I don't count.

And then theres the guys who only measure the monofilament....because I've seen guys cutting with piles of mono before attaching hooks.

I don't think you'll find a universal agreement on this subject.

Universal agreement among trollers? Is that possible on any subject??

Well maybe a couple like, "sealion stealing salmon off troll leader = bad sea lion".

Guided sport fishing rig anchoring on troll drag = bad guide.

Jellyfish fouling lures = not such a good place to drag.

Deckhand knocking slug king off of hook = .....

Amusing......

Being a Ketchikan Lowliner who is to dumb to leave Clarence Strait during the late winter fishery I would not think to many are interested in my leader length but if you are it is 42 to 45 inches. I did find a few fish in Clarence in March and April, what I didn't find is boats pretty nice fishery compared to the winter line.

I stopped by Pacific Net and Twine in Richmond yesterday Kris has a fair inventory of North Pacific wire so people should place orders soon. Some of our favorite color schemes by goldenbait are now being duplicated by soundwave and he has a chart there so he can cross reference.

I am going to a coop board meeting tomorrow and will be expressing my displeasure with our settlement prices and very strongly urging staff to do better. I will also urge the staff to place one of the Craig area tenders behind Noyes, say Kelly Cove or Little Bremerton that way maybe the fleet doesn't lose so much time turning around on a 4 day trip.

I know there is a lot skepticism on the southend as to whether the coop will work for those fishing down there and I am right there with the skeptics and will remind staff that the orphonage of Noyes produced a million pounds for the coop, as well as remind staff they work for us.

Anyway I wanted to say hi and tell everyone to keep there hand on it.

Tom,

Is that from the tip of the loop to the end of the hook, or the eye of the hook?

Are we talking "hootchie" tail leaders?

I started trolling in 1961 and for these many moons have wrestled with this vexing problem. When others can't sleep and there is no accomodating bed partner they count sheep. ( or do something with sheep ) I however stay on a higher plane and contemplate if the length of the leader should be include the hook or not. I have come to the conclusion that I must have it wrong hense my well deserved seat at the lowliner bar. Now if you could just set me straight my checkers would be overflowing , peace would come to my dreams and I could return to doing whatever you do with sheep........

Now I feel like a idiot.

Carl, 1961? Sheesh, we should ask you a few questions. Can't believe I bit - hook, line and sinker.

I think we need another forum subject category along the lines of "troller humor".
