twisty wire

My port side float bag wire constantly twists up between the fairlead stop and the boat. I think I have to splice every other day sometimes. Ugh!

I know the number one thing a person can do for this is put the wire on correctly to begin with (such as rolling the wire off the the spool in the same rotation as the gurdy). But still I am searching for a foolproof method on how to prevent this from happening and understanding what is going on; I can't afford this anymore.

I know I put a ball bearing swivel on the cannon ball and it seemed to help a little. Any of you know any tricks on what causes this problem and how to prevent that from happening at all? I just bought new wire and nearly had a coronary over the price of 4 spools of new stuff.

A couple of tips:

1. Keep your lines to your tags on the bags tight.

2. Good ball bearing swivels on your tags.

3. I can't believe how nice it is with bowpoles not having to worry about this problem as I don't usually fish float bags now.

4. They make a little swivel that you can splice into your wire that will go through your fairlead so you can splice that into the area where your getting your kinks.

5. Heavier, 5/64, wire kinks less and I use it on my floats.

Good luck

Be careful with those sampo bearing swivels they break at the drop of a hat. There is only about a 1/16th- 1/8th of metal on either side of the hole on that little nub that the clip is attached to. Lost 2 50lbrs so far.

I don't know anything about pulling bags, but I might have a trick that can help. I was having problems with my handcrank wire twisting up on me some years back, especially on one side. Tried all kinds of stuff, double swivels, pulled the wire the whole way out on the dock and respooled it, etc. Finally, one day I was talking to an old ironworker guy, spent lots of time rigging wire on to cranes and such. He said that the gurdy, and the pulley both have to be spinning in the same direction, like an old reel to reel movie projector. If you come from the bottom of one and over the top of the other, they will naturally throw a loop in the wire. I had never considered this, and that's how my bad side was rigged. I changed it, problem solved. A few years later I told a PT friend who was having bag problems about this, he did some changing, and it fixed it for him too.

I talked to Kris at pacific net and twine yesterday and he did say that the North Pacific Wire switched suppliers of wire last year and if we continue to have issues regarding their wire to be sure and let him know.
