Replacing Injectors

I was (still am) having trouble starting my engine. It would take ~30 seconds of cranking to get it started and also put out a lot of white smoke. I thought the injectors were not adequately atomizing the fuel so I replaced them (GM N60, Reliabilt part #83058, $60 each).

It took me a long time to get the first one out because I didn't have an injector puller and it simply would not come out. Eventually I did work one out and was able to find out what kind it was an order a rebuilt set. The first time the replacement set came the fuel connectors were offset when what I needed was the standard (old type) injector. Eventually I did get the correct set and had them installed my a local mechanic. I had never adjusted the valve clearances or anything so I wanted someone qualified to show me how the first time through.

I also made the mistake of turning my main fuel valve back on at some point when the injector was out. Diesel slowly seeped through the engine and throughout the lubricating system. By the time I noticed, it was because fuel was pouring out of the hole for the oil level dispstick. Doh!

I drained all the oil, changed the filter, drained diesel out of the exhaust system, turned the engine over by hand to remove the diesel from the cylinder, and put in new oil.

After all this, the new injectors don't seem to make a noticeable difference. The only improvement is the valves are now correctly adjusted. I'm $300 poorer but at least I learned a few things in the process.

Here's a picture of my injector (left) and the incorrect offset injector (right).
