I'm looking for a current Ca. salmon permit up to 25ft.

Anyone have any suggestions where else to look?

Thanks.

Any help would be great, how did you guys find your permits?

Is this the wrong forum to post?

Thanks

This is exactly the right forum to post on, although I think that a disproportionate number of us are are Alaskan trollers. I like to think that there are a number of West Coast trollers that can help you on here though. I see your problem though. I checked a few sites for permits, and CA troll permits are listed as WANTED, not FOR SALE. Out of curiosity, what does the "up to xx feet" thing mean? I take it as meaning that you cannot use an as your case, 25' permit if you own a 50' boat, but if you owned a 50' foot boat, could you use a 25' permit? Sorry if that is a stupid question.

You can shrink a permit, as in buy a bigger permit and put it on a smaller vessel but then the permit is the size you shrink it to, I think ?

It is vey confusing here. I think you can "stretch" a permit a few ft but not much.

It takes 18 months to transfer a permit over and the person you are buying from has to go onto your title for the vessel till it is transferred.

Again this is how I understand the procedure.

There is not a ton of permits around, It would be a pain in the butt to buy a vessel and take the permit, then resell the boat and deal with that whole nightmare.

Sorry, I got the wording backwards. I mean't to ask if you could use a 50' permit on a 25' boat, but I think the meaning got through. It just has always seemed confusing to me, since I see permits that are for odd sizes. I can see why they would do that, since they wouldn't want larger operations with extra money soaking up all of the permits, but it seemed confusing. I guess that California salmon looks like it has a future again, so people are holding onto the permits. Here, many people lease a permit for their first year. I did so myself. That system does indeed sound like a real pain in the butt. Can you fish the permit while its being transferred?
