Internet learning and sharing

Fellow trollers,

I was thinking about the creative process, the sharing, and learning (that I hope leads somewhere) going on at this site and read this article this morning by Thomas Friedman who wrote the "Olive Tree and the Lexus" a few years ago which described how modern technology is changing the way we learn and market our ideas.

While this article was describing college education, some aspects seemed relevant to the sharing and learning going on here for me. I think the challenge, which it always seems to be with good ideas, is the conversion into products, initiatives, results that stick.

This article isn't exactly on internet learning but it is on the importance of "how" we work. It reminds me of the best advice I ever got from a renowned highliner in about 1982. He told me we got paid in this fishing business for how many fish we sold, not how many hours we put in or how hard we tried. He had seen me dragging from dawn to dark, single handed, and even though he was a grinder himself he was trying to explain the importance of being alert, that the decision making was much more important than the hours.

Often in our troll fleet we work ourselves into a state of exhaustion and spend much of the season never fully recovered. It hurts both our health and our production in my opinion. This article helps explain why.
