The Charter fleet today (May 22) filed their lawsuit in DC court. SEAFA website has some information and more will be posted when available.
Hi All:
The Halibut Coalition put together a great 'Fact v. Fiction' insert for the Sitka paper this week. Hopefully they won't mind that I'm attaching it, because I think everyone who talks fish with friends, neighbors, and local policy makers would be served by studying up and maybe having a few of these on hand to share.
The public perception of what is going on in fisheries is often skewed towards the sport argument of 'little guy/public vs. big business'. We know that's not what's up on this issue. Please help get the word out on why it's crucial to limit all fisheries while halibut go through the low end of their cycle. And, of course, why it's also important that the entire charter industry step up and learn to live within their means, as opposed to chronically using the commercial harvest share as the capital to grow their industry. To be fair, not all charter operators support these lawsuits or resist reasonable regulation and fair harvest sharing. Unfortunately, too much of their current leadership obviously does.
