Aluminum Boatbuilders

Hi. New to the forum. I'm looking for recommendations and hope that this isn't too far off topic.

On the east coast there is very little affordable building done in aluminum. I am interested in a design similar to the Bristol Bay gillnetters (single inboard diesel only) that would allow me to stay on the fish design due to its live aboard capability. Bluefin are generally hunted by day boats and the costs attendant to those daily round trips are economic killers.

I've reached the point of considering a new boat (to fish into my retirement) and am seeking endurance options to the local day fishery designs (typically the Maine/Nova Scotia semi-displacement designs built in glass). I'm wondering if forum members can recommend quality aluminum builders who have built thirty two footers for the Bristol Bay fishery? Despite subscribing to nearly every trade journal there is, I just don't have any feel for who is still in the business and who does quality work and who doesn't.

I'd certainly appreciate any and all builder recommendations. Thanks ...

Carlos Schwantes of Northern Marine Maint. in Sitka Ak. builds beatiful boats and is available in the winter time. Look up his # and give him a call.

Matt Stromer at Alaska Skiff in Sitka ak is who I would choose. He has built a number of boats for the local charter fleet. he doesnt sub any work out does all of the welding himself. He has a nice shop and is very honest.

I would also put in a good work for Matt Stromer. He did a pile of midification to my new boat this year and I am really happy with everything. It helps alot that he owns his own troller. His insight into how systems will actually be used is invaluable.
