repainting spoons

Hello all, I recently was given about 100 painted coho spoons of various sizes and styles, however many of them are in need of repainting. I was wondering if any of you had any experience or tips you could share about repainting spoons. I would imagine they need to be stripped to bare metal before painting, but have seen pictures of people painting spoons on the grounds. What kind of paint do you use? I have seen paint at murray's, but have also seen some powder coat paints available online. Any info you got is much appreciated, or maybe you can warn me if this project is too big of a pain. Thanks, adkgar

Personally, I just grab a can of spray paint and have at it. Stripping the old paint is probably a good idea, but I have never bothered. It isn't professional, and it doesn't last forever, but I've found that if only half of the spoon is still colored, it really doesn't matter. Doing it right might be something to do on the long evenings winter trolling though.

We have painted spoons but no longer go through that. When buying painted spoons we buy them painted over chrome. As the paint wears off they fish even better.

I second paint over chrome. Anything else is just throwing your money away.

All the answers here, pretty much cover it. One thought though, if you have little kids, they really get a kick out of painting up a few spoons with their own crazy designs and getting them to work.

Great to see you back Yak, how is it going? Great post, I grew up painting coho spoons. Had a purple/cerise over chrome that really worked too. Ended up trying to duplicate it years later when I started power trolling. Had some success until I realized that fishing coho with spoons was only a good idea for me during Chinook retention periods and that purple and cerise over chrome was not such a good idea when you had to shake the Chinook who also liked em.

Thanks for all the response you guys. It is so nice to get feedback from people who share the same passion as I do. As with most everything in this business, I guess I will just try a few things and see if any of it works.... and then try again....and again...and again. :) :)

adkgar - I do a lot of lurking on saltwater salmon sport fishing forums. You may want to check out this site: http://www.bcfishingreports.com/forums/threads/20204-Home-made-painted-lures-flies/page47. This person has gone all-out painting spoons as a hobby and I have caught some fish on his paint jobs. There are currently 47 pages on this one thread but it takes you through his progression of development and experimenting. I have three 5-gallon buckets of coho spoons I plan to repaint one of these years when I have a chance to set up a space in my dinky little wood shop. Another winter project. . . .
