Trying to outfit a boat and would and would like to know what one would need to start his first year trolling? I am going order all my stuff now for next season and would love to take some clues. Size hooks, Color Flashers, hootchies I already know since I have seriously sportfished for 15 years and understand the flasher hootchie game pretty well but not to up on Spoons and Flasher combos or run only Spoons. I am going to buy King spoons as well but also would like a hint on best type. I really dont know any trollers to ask so I thought I would ask here.

Under Trollers and Gear on this site there is a guy selling a great assortment of spoons for Kings and Coho. As for any hints, keep throwing out the gears until you find something that works and keep using it until the fish either rip it off or they quit biting it. The last hint, if you keep using sportfishing techniques your first season, hopefully if you can afford to fish another year you will forget whatever you learn in that fishery. Not trying to be smart, but Ok, try trolling your 2 fathom leader, flasher, hootchies at 1 knot the first year. Then the next year bump up the speed for catching King Salmon and Coho at 2.3 and 2.7 knots. Email me back I would like to know if 25 years of trial and error is in error. Good luck, Dan

Thanks Dan I agree I have to leave behind sport techiniques but trolling at one knot seems super slow to me! Is that to keep gear from tangling and losing it or what. I usually try to troll slower for Kings and Chums but faster for Coho.

Hi AKFisher, yep, at 1knot it is slow, your gear will not fish at sport speed and it will get tangled up, do speed up. Chums do like to take the hook slow and since some of the guys are real helpful on this site, the Index topic call Chums, shows some real good gear to use and a gnarly tangle. If you get into that fishery, to save you some time on your learning curve, and money, buy the big Oki flashers, commercial ones if you can still buy them in Blue and you do not have to buy the bugs you see guys fishing. A #7 mustad siwash blue steel hook snelled tied at 18inches should do the trick. The action at the terminal end is wobbling. If your gear is rotating, your going to fast, side to side and wobbling. That seems to work from Lynn canal to deep Inlet. Good fishing to you, and hope you plug your boat with fish. Dan
