Does anyone recommend an insurance company that deals with commercial fishing boats and provides reasonable insurance rates. I am looking at buying a 40 to 42 foot fiberglass boat and want to get a ball park idea how much it will cost to insure the boat.

Any information would be greatly appreciated.

Thanks, Ed

If you are trolling in SE and can get in I recommend a pool. I am in the Pacific Troller's Fund with Seafood Producer's Co-operative and it works great for me. Returns 100% nearly every year and the people are great to work with. Takes only 4-5 years to get vested.

There are other pools, I think SEAFA, has one.

Good luck.

I think the pool is probably the best if you can get in. If that is not an option, both Griffin McClain and Eric Evern in Seattle gave me good options. I talked to 2 other insurers who wasted a lot of my time, and so was happy to find those 2.

I will also take a look at what these insurance companies have to offer. Thanks for the information.

I've used Poseidon Insurance to insure commercial vessels.

Pools are a better deal because after about 4 years, you become vested and you don't have to pay into them unless there is a loss.

In my experience vessel insurance runs about 4-5% of the value of the boat.

Fishing Vessel reserve is another pool based out of Seattle.

FYI, most pools require recommendations from current members (PTF wants six). In addition you need to be an SPC member to get into PTF. Fishing Vessel Reserve is also good. For liability insurance, United Trollers Fund is a good pool.
